I opened Pandora’s box. I didn’t think they’d keep talking about mates like this. I shouldn’t have asked when I already knew that I wouldn’t be able to understand them. That was already established. The moment I met her, I knew she couldn’t be mine. Fate was cruel that way.

Elias threw me a glance. Man, don’t get all moody. You opened the topic,” he teased, but his tone was light.

Thankfully, Elias changed the subject before my mood soured the whole night.

They said Jaxon’s being released soon,he muttered, scratching the back of his neck.

The laughter died instantly.

Likereally soon. Even sooner than we originally thought,” Elias continued. I know someone who works in prison. They said he’s already completed his rehabilitation term.

The room fell into a heavy silence.

Wasn’t it ten years?Rowan finally asked.

It was,Elias replied. That’s the maximum term. However, it got mitigated by his good behavior, they said. He volunteered for community work inside the cells and taught combat to the younger inmates. So, it was reduced to half the term.

Cade clicked his tongue and leaned back, crossing his arms. He was trying to look indifferent, but his eyes darkened. Good behavior, huh,he muttered.

I didn’t say anything.

Jaxon Trevane.

The name itself was like poison.

I didn’t hate him, not in the way others did. I didn’t even know him that well. However, I knew what his shadow felt like.

He was supposed to be the True Alpha. He was the one with the blood everyone acknowledged.

After all, my father may have been the eldest, but his blood was tainted. The Trevanes made sure I never forgot that.

Cade was still talking about legalitieshow even as Practor, he couldn’t interfere. Separation of powers,he said, rubbing his temple. Unless there’s a grave abuse of discretion, the judiciary’s decisions are final.

I knew all that.

I leaned forward and opened a can of soda from the table, the hiss cutting through the silence.

I didn’t even like soda. It was too sweet. I hadn’t touched one in years. But lately, I’ve been craving sweet things.

I’m keeping the title,” I said, finally breaking the silence.

Four pairs of eyes turned to me.

Cade smirked. That’s good,he said. You earned it.

I gave a short nod.

Francis leaned forward, curiosity seen in his eyes. You think he’ll come after it?

I shrugged and said in a certain tone, He will.”

They all exchanged glances, but no one argued. They knew it was true.

Jaxon Trevane didn’t seem like the type to return quietly, especially not after a public fall from grace.

Elias whistled low. You know what’s crazy? After all that’s happened, I still don’t think the man’s changed.”

Rowan let out a humorless laugh. Men like him don’t. They just learn to hide it better.

I stayed silent again.

I leaned back and stared at the ceiling, my soda untouched now, condensation dripping onto my fingers. The night stretched on, laughter trying to resurface but never fully recovering its spark.

Cade eventually smiled again, forcing a lightness into the room. Anyway, Abel,he said, if you ever need anything, you tell us.

I gave him a small nod. Appreciate it.

It was the morning after, and I had a hangover. It wasn’t because of alcohol, thoughI didn’t drink last night. It was because of karaoke.

The five of us howled into a karaoke mic like it was a full moon the whole night.

I’d never done karaoke before. They practically dragged me into it. Rowan butchered a love ballad so bad it felt like an act of violence. Elias kept trying to harmonize but only succeeded in making it worse. Cade had a voice that could probably start wars. Francis tried to rap. The only thing that saved my ears was the fact that I wasn’t any better, though if I had to say so myself, I was still better than them.

By the time the night ended, my throat burned and my head felt like someone had been drumming on it all night.

I groaned, pulling a pillow over my face as the morning light crept through the curtains.

A knock came at the door.

I didn’t move. “Come in,” I muttered, my voice muffled by the pillow.

The door creaked open. Alpha?

I peeked out from under the pillow. Tyson. He stood stiffly by the door, his hands behind his back, his expression all sorts of nervous.

What?I asked, rubbing my temples.

You’re being called to the main house.”

That was all he said, but I already understood.

I pushed myself up slowly, running a hand through my hair. I see.

Tyson pursed his lips.

I sighed, swung my legs off the bed, and grabbed the nearest shirt. I didn’t even bother changing out of the ridiculous redandgreen pajamas I’d worn last night. When Tyson gave me a pointed look, I rolled my eyes. Fine,I muttered, heading toward the wardrobe and pulling on a new pairplain gray this time.

“Better?
