I gathered all the books I had in my study, piling them high on the old oak table. Dust rose into the air as I flipped through the brittle pages, written in Latin.
The passage was old, untouched for centuries. De Alpha vero sanguinis linea continuanda est per progeniem legitimam in coniunctione naturalis paris.
The line of the True Alpha shall be continued through legitimate progeny born of natural pairings.
I sat back in my chair, exhaling through my nose. I thought, at first, that this would come down to a fight. A battle to the death. That was how things used to be done. Although it was definitely barbaric and outdated.
However, it might have been a battle rather than this bureaucratic contest for bloodlines and heirs.
I leaned forward and rubbed my temples. It seemed Jaxon didn’t know about it, too. I could tell by the flash in his eyes when Elder Thane said it out loud.
He knew that he wouldn’t be able to easily produce an heir, too.
Werewolves bred casually, but forming a family was much more difficult. We weren’t like humans who could stumble upon children by chance. Our kind needed more than attraction -it needed a bond.
Mated pairs were tied by blood and energy. When they mated, the body recognized it, and conception came easily.
But when that bond didn’t exist, it was different. The body resisted. The soul did, too. It could take years of failed attempts, if it ever happened at all.
Jaxon had already rejected Arden. His true mate.
Unless he finds his second–chance mate, he will have a hard time forming a new family.
Although his parents were already scheming before I left the estate, telling him that they would find him a “pretty, young woman from a strong family.”
They were planning to hand some poor girl to him like cattle, to make a political heir and call it divine right. The thought made my skin crawl.

I leaned back in the chair, staring at the ceiling for a long while. The rain had started again outside, tapping against the windows.
I thought about Jaxon’s eyes, the way he smiled like he already knew how to win. I couldn’t shake the feeling that this wasn’t just about the title for him.
There was something else there.
Hatred, maybe.
Or revenge.
But for what?
I didn’t have that answer yet.
My father’s voice echoed faintly in my head. Protect the pack, Abel. Above all, protect the pack.
I clicked my tongue in irritation. It was one of the last things he’d said to me before he died. Even in death, he still found ways to haunt me.
I stood, pacing the length of the room, and went to the cabinet that held the records of those we saved during our raids.
I opened the drawer. I flipped through the old papers, my fingers brushing over the names until I stopped on a single one.
Name: Luna Lincoln
Breed: Human
Age: 24
Origin: Springfield University, Ylarc
I stared at the name for a long moment.
I sighed, pressing my thumb to the edge of the paper. “Am I really considering this?” I muttered under my breath.

“Make sure to pick up the sacks of flour from the farmer’s market before going to the diner.”
“Yes,” I muttered, stuffing the leftover eggs into my mouth. The yolk had gone cold, the edges of the fried white slightly rubbery, but I swallowed anyway.
“And the chicken, too,” she added without looking at me. “Princess wants fried chicken.”
“Yes.”
I was half there, half lost in my thoughts–still trying to process how she nearly sold me.
“Are you listening?” she snapped, slamming the table.
The fork clattered against my plate, echoing in the kitchen.
“Yes,” I said, louder this time.
Her eyes narrowed. “So ungrateful,” she muttered, sitting back down and folding her arms. “I raise you, feed you, keep this roof over your head, and you give me one–word answers like I’m your maid.”
I sighed quietly. I couldn’t win.
If I answered curtly, I would be ungrateful.
If I spoke more, I would be rebellious.
There was no version of me that pleased her.
I’ve always wanted to leave, of course. However, leaving meant letting go of this house… and the diner.
My mother’s diner.
The last piece of her is left in this town.
I always imagined she’d come back one day–if not in body, then in warmth. Yet, that was just a childish dream.
So, I stayed because I couldn’t let go of what was mine.
Not until I graduated. Not until I got the diner back in my name.
That thought alone kept me moving.

By the time I got to school, the morning crowd had already gathered near the gates.

Marcel waved with a bright smile. I waved back with a small smile, forcing my shoulders to relax.
However, before I could reach her, a familiar voice stopped me.
“Still no Abel?”
I pursed my lips. Princess really couldn’t skip one day in tormenting me, huh? She was standing a few feet away, arms crossed, surrounded by her posse.
I pressed my lips together, my hands tightening around the strap of my bag.
Marcel was suddenly by my side, her eyes darting between us.
“Drop it, Princess,” I said quietly.
Joshua, standing next to her, gave an exaggerated sigh. “Just admit you made up a boyfriend to prove you’re not into me,” he said with a smug grin.
My brows furrowed. “You wish.”
A few heads turned. Students slowed down to watch, waiting for the drama to unfold.
Princess‘ smirk widened. “Oh? Then where is he, huh? It’s been a week, and you still haven’t proved his existence.”
