We were in his car, and I realized how different he seemed when it was just the two of us.

He drove slower than I expected, his eyes fixed ahead. Then, without warning, he said, Who was that person?

I tilted my head to the side. Princess?I asked, unsure which person he meant. She’s my stepsister.

He shook his head, his eyes still on the road. No. The boy. The one who keeps staring at you.

The boy?I frowned slightly. Who?

He clicked his tongue in irritation and didn’t respond further.

The air felt heavier somehow. I glanced at his side profile and looked away quickly. My fingers fidgeted with the hem of my shirt. Could I turn the radio on? Probably not. He didn’t seem like the kind of person who liked small talkor noise, for that matter.

Is this your car?I asked just to break the quiet.

He glanced at me briefly, then back to the road. No. I borrowed it from a friend.

Oh.I traced the seam of the seat with my fingertips.

I didn’t think it would be this fancy,he muttered. That bastard should have lent me a simpler one.”

I like it,I said softly.

I heard his breath hitch. I glanced at him and saw his hands tighten slightly around the steering wheel.

Do you have anywhere to go right now?he asked suddenly.

My eyes widened. I had almost forgotten. Oh no.

What?

I have to go to the farmer’s market,I said quickly, already reaching for my bag. Queenie will have my throat if I don’t get them before my shift.

I’m sorry,I said after a moment. You can enjoy your time here in Ylarc. I have something to do. You can drop me off at the bus station.

What?he asked again.

Hmm?

What is it that you need to do?

I have to pick some things up from the market,I said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind

my ear.

He stayed quiet for a while after that. Then, without a word, he turned the car around.

I was stunned at the sudden movement. You can drop me off here,” I said, pointing toward the intersection ahead. “The bus stop is near.

He clicked his tongue. I’ll take you there.

To the farmer’s market?I asked incredulously.

Yes.

You don’t have to. Really, it’s-

He cut me off with a look. I swallowed hard and sat back against the seat.

Just sit there and be pretty,he said.

The words hung in the air for a second too long. My cheeks flushed immediately. Pretty?I repeated under my breath.

He shifted in his seat. Don’t make anything of it.” His jaw flexed, and he looked out the window. It’s just an expression.”

But when I turned my head to study him, his ears were red, betraying him completely.

The ride to the farmer’s market was quiet, except for the soft sound of the radio playing some old ballad that neither of us commented on. Abel had one hand on the steering wheel, his other resting loosely on his thigh, but every time the car slowed, I could feel his eyes glance toward me.

When we finally arrived, the lot was halfempty. It wasn’t as busy as it usually was, thank

I was about to step out of the car when he reached out and held my wrist. His fingers sent a spark through me before I could stop it. It wasn’t the first time, but it still caught me off guard.

His grip was firm but fleeting; he let go immediately, as though he didn’t trust himself to hold on too long.

What would you be doing here?he asked. I could feel the curiosity behind it. Do you need ingredients for your house?

I shook my head, brushing off the tingling in my wrist. I need to pick up some eggs and chicken for my work at the diner.

He frowned slightly, his brows pulling together. Shouldn’t the owner take care of the inventory?

My stepmom is the owner,I muttered, reaching for the door handle. His expression showed he was curious, but before he could ask anything else, I opened the door and stepped out into the warm air.

The scent of the farmer’s market hit me immediately. It was the kind of smell that pulled memories out of you without warning. I’ve been coming here since I was a child. My mother used to bring me here every weekend. She knew most of the vendors by name, and they’d always slip her the best produce or an extra egg carton with a wink.

I walked ahead, adjusting the strap of my bag, feeling the uneven gravel under my shoes. Abel followed a few steps behind.

Luna!someone called out from the first row of stalls.

I turned, smiling automatically. Morning, Belle.”

You’re getting prettier every time I see you!she exclaimed, her hands on her hips. Her friend beside her nodded eagerly, eyes darting to Abel. And who’s that handsome man behind you,

huh?

I felt my cheeks warm. Just a friend,” I said quickly, shaking my head.

Belle’s grin widened like she didn’t believe me for a second. Mmhmm. Sure, sure. A friend.

I chuckled softly and bowed my head in polite farewell before moving on. Abel didn’t say anything. He just gave a small nod to them as he followed. His silence only made people stare

more.
