Chapter 329 Unwanted Visitor
ABEL
The moment the knock sounded, I knew it wasn’t good.

The room had already fallen into silence. Cade was the first to move, his eyes going to Arden like instinct. By the time I opened the door, I was already regretting not bringing a weapon closer to hand.
“Jaxon.”
He leaned against the doorframe with his familiar arrogant smile. His buzzed hair was even shorter than I remembered.
“I had a feeling,” he said casually, stepping over the threshold without waiting for an invitation. “It seems I was right. You are all here.”
Behind me, I could feel Cade’s low growl. Arden’s breath hitched faintly, and she clutched at Cade’s arm. He drew her closer protectively, serving as a quiet warning.
Jaxon turned toward them, grin widening. “Well, well. Time has been kind to you, my mate,” he said.
“Mine,” Cade said through clenched teeth, reminding Jaxon to stay in his lane.
I frowned, watching the exchange carefully. Then his gaze shifted again, lazily sweeping toward Rowan. “And where’s your mate?” he asked.
“None of your damn business,” Rowan said nonchalantly, leaning back against the counter. “We’re planning for my wedding here. Leave.”
Jaxon chuckled, shaking his head. “Aww, I’m hurt. You’re getting married and you didn’t even invite me. I heard these imbeciles are your groomsmen.”
Rowan’s lips curved slightly. “Couldn’t send an invitation to jail, sorry.”
Jaxon’s smirk faltered for a moment. Then he spread his arms dramatically. “Fair point. I suppose it would’ve been hard to RSVP from a cell. But I thought you’d at least save me a seat.”
“Even if you were out of jail,” Rowan said coolly, “I wouldn’t invite you.”
Rowan added, “Abel’s much more fun to hang out with, even if he’s a decade older.”

I groaned under my breath. “Appreciate that, kid.”
“Just speaking facts,” Rowan muttered with a shrug.
“Alright, way to rub it in my face,” Jaxon said.

Meanwhile, I clicked my tongue and massaged the bridge of my nose. He was stalling. That was Jaxon’s favorite trick–provoke everyone else until they slip and give him what he wants.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
He turned toward me. “Is that how you greet family now, Abel?”
“We stopped being family a long time ago,” I said evenly.
Jaxon shrugged and continued speaking, “You’ve been quiet lately. I thought I’d come see what my favorite cousin is hiding. You know how rumors travel.”
He knew something.
I kept my tone measured. “I don’t know what rumors you’ve been hearing, but you came to the wrong house.”
“Have I?” he asked lightly, scanning the room. He was smarter than people gave him credit for.
He stepped further inside. “You always did like simple living, didn’t you, Abel?”
I didn’t respond. Cade’s grip on Arden tightened again, and I saw her eyes dart toward me, silently asking what was happening. Rowan subtly shifted his stance, blocking the hallway entrance from view. Smart. He must’ve guessed where Tessa hid Luna.
Jaxon looked between us all. Then he smiled again, but this time, it wasn’t the playful grin he entered with. It was cold.
“Where is she?” he asked.
I scoffed, trying to play it off. “You’ll have to be more specific, Jaxon. I don’t keep track of every woman you’re after these days.”
He chuckled. “Funny. But you know exactly who I’m talking about.”
He took a slow step forward, and Cade moved instinctively in front of Arden. Jaxon’s eyes flickered to the hallway again. “I heard something interesting. You came here with someone this morning”

I leaned against the counter, feigning calm. “You shouldn’t believe everything you hear.”
“Oh, but when the information comes from inside your territory, it’s usually worth listening to,” he said, his smirk returning.
Jaxon studied me for a long moment, then exhaled like he was bored. “No matter. I’ll find her eventually.”
I forced a small, disinterested laugh. “You’ve always had a thing for chasing what you can’t have. Maybe that’ll be your downfall.”
There was no way I was showing him Luna.
I was sure he and the family would do something. I knew it was inevitable, but I was planning on delaying it for a long time. As long as possible. Moreover, I knew Jaxon’s type. He liked those he could taint.
When he realized he wouldn’t get anything, he exhaled softly and changed his target.
He turned toward Arden.
I felt Cade tense instantly. Jaxon smirked. “Relax, Praetor Alpha. I’m only curious.”
“Curiosity gets people killed,” Cade replied.
Arden’s hand came up gently, touching Cade’s arm. “It’s fine, baby,” she murmured.
The tension in Cade’s stance softened a little, but only because she asked. Jaxon raised a brow at the exchange.
“I heard you have a child,” he said conversationally.
“Yes,” Arden said, her voice even but wary.
“Good for you.” Jaxon smiled faintly, and then his eyes darkened as they landed on Cade. “It should’ve been mine, though.”
Cade stiffened.
Then, quieter, he added, “Everything should’ve been mine.”
For a fleeting second, I saw the longing in his eyes. It wasn’t only about Arden. It was about everything that came with her. The life. The family. The title. The legacy.

He didn’t just want power. He wanted validation. He wanted to feel like the world revolved around him again, like it used to when he was the golden son, before everything went to hell.
“I see what this is now,” I muttered under my breath, my fingers twitching against my side.
He wanted Cade’s life. He wanted what he couldn’t have, what he had already destroyed for himself long ago.
