I heard the door slam shut, but Tessa held onto my hand for a while. Her grip was tight, waiting for the air to settle after the storm. She didn’t move until Arden came to fetch us.
“He’s gone,” she said.
Tessa exhaled shakily, and I squeezed her hand before pulling away. My legs carried me to the living room before I even decided to move. Everyone was still there; however, the tension was definitely thicker than before.
The mood had severely dampened. It appeared like whoever this Jaxon guy was, he was bad
news.
I couldn’t hear every single detail of their conversation, but what I did catch from down the hall didn’t sound like an ordinary argument. And yet, from the few words that carried, Jaxon had sounded… friendly.
I hesitated near the doorway before finally blurting out, “What’s happening?”
Abel looked up immediately, but before he could say anything, I pushed on. “Who was that guy?”
Tessa crossed her arms. “Jaxon,” she said. “I didn’t think he’d be a problem, but he’s released.”
I looked toward Abel. He didn’t meet my gaze. His hand was still pressed to the bridge of his nose. “He’s still the same,” Cade muttered beside Arden.
Rowan gave a low scoff. “The same? He’s gotten worse, you mean.”
Cade glanced at him, but Rowan wasn’t done. “I hate that he appears smarter now. He used to only think with his dick and his muscles, and now it seems like he’s thinking with his mind.”
“Rowan,” Tessa sighed, giving his arm a warning squeeze, but I caught the amusement in her eyes when he smirked down at her. She shook her head, muttering something about him being the worst before resting her hand against his chest.
Based on their reactions, I could guess that this Jaxon guy was the rightful heir to the Alpha title. Abel did mention he had been imprisoned before and was now released.
“Can I just ask?” I said quietly.

All eyes turned toward me.

“How serious is this?” I muttered. “How big is the title we’re fighting for?”

For a moment, no one answered. They just exchanged looks. Then Rowan broke the silence, leaning back casually in his chair. “You didn’t tell her?” he asked, tilting his head toward Abel.
I frowned while Abel’s jaw clenched.
“She doesn’t have to know the gravity of it,” he grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Then let me do the honors,” Rowan said, looking far too entertained for someone talking about something this serious.
I raised an eyebrow at him, but he only smiled wider. “That guy,” he said, jerking his thumb toward Cade, “is like the president.”
Cade groaned. “Rowan.”
President?
Rowan continued anyway. “Meanwhile, Abel and I-” he pointed to himself and then at Abel, “-we’ve got the same title, give or take. Let’s just say we’re like… mayors? Congressmen? I don’t know–presidents of our own factions?”
My mouth opened, then closed, then opened again.
I turned to Abel, but he was looking anywhere except me.
“You mean all this time, you guys have been…”
“Running the South,” Rowan finished for me. “Pretty much.”
“So, this isn’t just some political title, is it? It’s literal territory?” I added.
“Pack territory,” Cade said, nodding once. “Fenra is divided under an Alpha’s rule. West, North, East, and South. Abel governs the West. I govern over everything.”
My breath hitched.
“Abel and I have the same title,” Rowan continued. “We’re both Alphas. Let’s just say the position comes with a ridiculous amount of paperwork and an even more ridiculous amount of stress.”
“You broke her,” Tessa said, hitting Rowan’s arm lightly, and that snapped me back to the

present.
Rowan laughed. “What? She asked!”
Abel sighed beside me, pinching the bridge of his nose again. “You didn’t have to put it that way.”
“How else would I have put it?” Rowan countered. “We’re not running a high school club, Abel. She deserves to know the scale of what she’s in.”
Tessa rolled her eyes and leaned into him, muttering something under her breath that sounded suspiciously like “show–off.”
Arden must’ve noticed the deer–in–headlights look on my face because her expression softened. “Don’t be too overwhelmed,” she said kindly, moving closer. “They hold important positions, but we’re all equal anyway. They just have more responsibility.”
She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “You don’t know how much they act like babies.”
At that, Tessa snorted. “That’s the truest thing you’ve ever said.”
Abel rolled his eyes but didn’t deny it, which only made me smile faintly.
Arden winked at me. “At the end of the day, they’re just normal men trying to figure out how to keep their families and their packs alive without losing their sanity.”
“Barely managing,” Rowan muttered under his breath, earning a light shove from Tessa.
“Barely is still managing,” she retorted with a grin.
The mood eased a little, and for a second, it didn’t feel like I was surrounded by powerful people who could probably topple governments if they wanted to.
Then Cade’s voice broke through the easy laughter. “The lineage rights, right?” he asked, turning toward Abel.
Abel nodded, that familiar, focused look returning to his face. “That’s the route I’m planning to go.”
“That’s the only route you have,” Rowan said with a smirk. “Congrats, you’re finally going to get lucky.”
Abel clicked his tongue and promptly smacked the back of Rowan’s head. “Idiot,” Abel
