With the others gone, the house had tremendously quieted down. It was just Abel and me at the dining table.
He was back to not acknowledging my presence, his focus entirely on the food before him. I sat across from him, chewing as quietly as I could. He didn’t speak, didn’t look at me, didn’t even move except to raise his fork to his mouth.
Still, I found myself stealing glances.
He ate fast. It was almost mesmerizing. His hand moved as though he had memorized every gesture. He finished his food before I was even halfway through mine, pushing his plate slightly aside with a low exhale.
Was that because he was an Alpha?
Did Alphas eat fast? Was it instinct? I didn’t know.
But suddenly, I felt the stupid urge to match his pace. Maybe I just didn’t want him to think I was slow or useless. So I shoveled another spoonful of food into my mouth, trying not to make noise. By the time I realized I was eating too fast, it was already too late.
“Slow down,” he muttered without even looking at me. “You’re going to choke.”
And then, of course, I choked.
He was beside me in an instant, moving faster than I’d ever seen anyone move before. His chair scraped the floor, his hand reaching for the glass of water.
He held the glass to my lips and tilted it slightly. Water slipped past my mouth and down my throat. I took it in hurried gulps, my lips wet, my breath catching between sips. He watched me closely, one hand still cupping my chin.
When the coughing finally subsided, I found myself frozen. My eyes lifted, meeting his.
His eyes were dark, pinning me down in place. His hand lingered against my skin, thumb brushing just below my bottom lip, catching a stray drop of water,
My breath hitched. His gaze lowered to my mouth, and something flickered there. He clicked his tongue softly, breaking the moment. Then he let go of my chin, wiping his thumb on a napkin like nothing had happened.

I bit my lip, looking away. “I just don’t like burdening other people while eating,” I muttered. “It’s either I eat alone or I wait for someone. I’m not used to being… waited for.”
He sighed quietly, shaking his head.”Just eat at your pace,” he said. “What are you rushing for?”
I glanced at him, unsure if I’d heard that hint of warmth correctly.
“It’s not like I’m going to be going anywhere.”
He reached across the table and grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl. The way he peeled it made me want to laugh for no reason at all. I smiled instead. He was really hard to comprehend. One second, he was scolding me; the next, he was being strangely gentle without realizing it.
He caught me staring. “What?”
“Nothing,” I said quickly, looking down at my plate. “You’re just really confusing.”
He didn’t reply to that. He just took a bite of the banana, eyes flicking toward me briefly before returning to whatever he was thinking about. I decided not to push it.
So I ate slowly this time. When I finally finished, I leaned back with a small sigh of relief. Abel’s gaze went to my plate, then back to me.
“Now that you’re done,” he started before pushing his chair back slightly, one arm resting against the table. “Let’s sign the contract.”
“Contract?”
He stood up without another word. The sound of his chair scraping against the floor filled the room, and I watched as he walked toward the drawers near the far end of the kitchen. The drawer opened with a faint creak. He reached in and pulled something out.
He laid the papers on the table between us, his fingers brushing the top edge like he’d been waiting for the right time to reveal it.
“What’s that?” I asked carefully, though I already suspected the answer.
He didn’t look at me when he spoke. “The contract.”
He pushed it toward me. “You should read it.”
The faint smell of ink reached me as I pulled it closer. The paper felt heavier than it looked. I

tilted my head and began to read, my heart sinking lower with every line my eyes caught.
It wasn’t long, but the message was clear.
To copulate until a son or daughter is born.
