York's face turned crimson under his aunt's barrage of criticism, and he glanced at Beasley, silently begging for rescue.
Noticing York's desperate look, Beasley finally dropped his air of amusement and turned to Claire. "Aunt Claire, York's told me he'll be reporting back to The Sinclair Group within the month."
York's head snapped up. What? When did I say that?!
Manuel Paige's stern expression immediately softened at Beasley's words. Even Claire, who had been frowning, nodded in approval. "That's good to hear."
York could only swallow his protest in silence, feeling utterly trapped.
If he really went back, he'd be forced into those endless blind dates for sure.
His mouth still tasted bitter when Beasley suddenly changed the subject, turning to Mr. Sinclair. "Mr. Sinclair, you're aware of the movie York and I invested in, right?"
Manuel nodded. "I've heard a bit. It's a science fiction film, based on a famous novel of the same name. What's the author's name again?"
"STAR," Frederick chimed in, finally joining the conversation after quietly listening from the side. "A lot of the younger folks at my office are huge fans, so I've heard about this author."
Claire glanced at her husband with a teasing smile. "Only heard about it? Then why did I see a whole set of STAR's novels on your desk?"
Without missing a beat, Frederick replied, "It's true, I've just heard about it. That set of books was a birthday gift from a colleague. He insisted I had to read them."
He shrugged, feigning innocence. "It was a thoughtful gift—I couldn't just toss them out, so I brought them home."
Claire, always the busy executive, added, "Since York invested in the film, I did some research too. Turns out, STAR's gotten a lot of attention lately—accused of plagiarism, of all things. And guess who's behind it? The Simmons family. I've said it before, you can't trust them. How many shoddy developments have they left unfinished over the years? They've hurt plenty of people."
Beasley listened quietly, a little frustrated. He'd meant to steer the conversation toward the movie's lead actress, Rosamund, but it had all circled back to STAR instead.
Just then, Paige shot her husband a quick, furtive glance. Seeing he looked unbothered, she smiled and said, "It seems York really put a lot of thought into this investment. He chose a well-known novel, and even Fred says it's worth reading."
York nodded enthusiastically. "Of course!"
He was about to say more, but Beasley cut in, seizing the moment. "That's right. And besides the quality of the original story, York was very careful about casting the leads."
Finally, he'd managed to nudge the conversation back on track.
