Manuel said, "Evelyn and Rosamund are in the film too, right? Rosamund's the lead actress, isn't she?"
Beasley nodded. "That's right."
He glanced at the Sinclairs, gauging their reactions as he continued, "Rosamund actually won Best Actress at an international film festival. York invited her to come back and star in this film, and she agreed."
Manuel nodded approvingly. "Rosamund's a good kid—always has been. Honestly, both you and Rosamund turned out great. Unlike my own boy, who can't seem to get his act together."
As he spoke, Manuel's tone shifted into gentle scolding, turning his attention to York.
York's handsome face tightened in discomfort, but he didn't dare talk back.
Deep down, he'd always harbored a bit of resentment. If only his father had been more capable, York wouldn't have been forced to come back and take over the family business.
Ever since he was a child, he'd assumed the family legacy would go to his older brother; it had nothing to do with him. Even if there was some arranged marriage in the cards, surely it shouldn't have landed on his shoulders.
But then, a few years ago, his brother was paralyzed in an accident. The trauma changed him—he became withdrawn and bitter, and it was clear he'd never be able to take over. That's when the family's attention shifted to York.
York resented it deeply.
To make matters worse, there was someone he cared about—someone he could never be with. Even so, he couldn't bring himself to consider anyone else.
When Claire heard Rosamund's name, it stirred a memory. She turned to York and asked, "York, didn't you used to visit the Worthingtons a lot back in middle school?"
Beasley raised an eyebrow at this. Really? Had York been interested in Rosamund since they were kids?
York's heart skipped a beat. Instinctively, he glanced at Paige.
Paige's expression flickered, but she quickly composed herself and came to York's rescue. "Are you talking about when York was in eighth grade? That was actually my idea—I asked him to go."
All this time, he'd thought Beasley and Rosamund were the ones who belonged together. Lately, there'd even been gossip about the two of them all over social media.
This love triangle gave Manuel a headache. He couldn't help but worry it might drive a wedge between his son and Beasley.
Beasley, for his part, met Manuel's probing gaze without hesitation, completely at ease.
Paige picked up where her husband had left off, answering his earlier question. "Of course I let them know ahead of time."
She went on to explain, "That year, I met Rosamund's mother at a charity auction. We both had our eyes on a set of antique European jewelry, but in the end, she let me have it. I wanted to return the favor, but showing up in person with a thank-you gift felt a bit too formal. So I asked York to deliver it a couple of times—just a kid dropping by, nothing out of the ordinary. And back in elementary school, York and Rosamund were classmates anyway, so it wasn't awkward."
Manuel finally relaxed at his wife's explanation.
His foolish son had better not end up falling for the same woman as his own brother. That would be a real mess.
