Willow and Juliette returned to their booth to find the food they'd ordered had already arrived—thinly sliced beef, plump shrimp dumplings, tender lamb, and juicy cuts of steak. They hadn't held back, especially Juliette, who had a particular fondness for anything hearty.
"That guy just now looked like real trouble. Let's eat fast and get out of here," Juliette said, already reaching for the sizzling grill to cook some meat.
Willow nodded, still unsettled by how much Connor had changed over the past few years. The way he'd looked at her and Juliette earlier made her skin crawl, as if his gaze could prick right through her.
"Try this. I timed it perfectly," Juliette said, dropping a slice of tender beef into Willow's small bowl.
Willow dipped the meat into the sauce and tasted it. It melted in her mouth.
"It's really tender. Delicious," she remarked with her usual calm honesty.
"Now spill—who was that handsome doctor we ran into outside the theater?" Juliette hadn't forgotten her earlier curiosity.
Willow might have acted indifferent toward the doctor, but Juliette could tell she wasn't actually put off by him. Unlike Connor, whose sleazy stare had set off every alarm in Juliette's body, the doctor seemed to leave no such discomfort.
Willow glanced up, smiling as she teased, "Since when are you this interested in a random guy?"
"I just have a hunch he's into you," Juliette replied bluntly. "And it's obvious you were trying to keep your distance."
Willow wasn't surprised. Juliette knew her too well, so she didn't bother to hide the truth.
Juliette didn't push any further. She just worried Willow might let one bad guy ruin her chances with someone better. But Willow had always had her own plans, and maybe it was best to let things unfold naturally.
In the end, Willow not only managed to avoid explaining who Ian was, but also quietly deflected Juliette's interest in him. She hated lying to her friend, and this way, she didn't have to.
The two women chatted as they ate, but their pace never slowed, and soon they'd polished off every last bite.
When it was time to pay—Juliette's treat tonight—they headed to the register together and, to their dismay, ran into Connor again. This time, a sweet, doe-eyed girl stood beside him—his current girlfriend, Daisy.
Eager to keep up her innocent image in front of her wealthy boyfriend, Daisy nibbled politely and declared herself full after just a few bites. By coincidence, she finished up at the same time Willow and Juliette did, and all four arrived at the counter together.
