Boss, Your Ex-Wife is Unreachable Now! novel Chapter 238

This area was part of a scenic nature reserve, with a rustic lodge perched halfway up the mountain—a welcoming spot where hikers could pause for a hearty, home-style meal and catch their breath before continuing.

Willow and her group aimed to reach the lodge by noon, planning to enjoy lunch and a restful break there until half past three. As long as they made it to the summit by six-thirty, they’d be rewarded with a breathtaking sunset.

It was still early—somewhere between eight and nine in the morning—and the mountain air was crisp and invigorating. Even at the foot of the trail, the freshness left everyone feeling alert and renewed.

The path wound up the slope in gentle, looping curves, demanding a fair amount of stamina.

After about half an hour, Willow found her rhythm. Her breathing steadied, and her pace quickened noticeably as she adjusted to the climb.

Up ahead, she spotted Juliette chatting cheerfully with Dr. Shaw, the two of them thoroughly engrossed in conversation. Willow decided not to catch up, preferring to stick with her current speed.

This, however, left the two men walking beside her in a bit of a predicament.

“Looks like you’ve done this before, Miss Sheffield?” Ryan broke the silence, striking up a conversation.

Willow had hiked plenty in her last life, but not yet in this one. Still, with Officer Chase around, it was best to stick to the truth—no point giving him an excuse to pick holes in her story.

“Sometimes, when I’m out looking for inspiration, I’ll go hiking,” Willow replied.

“Inspiration?” Ryan sounded a little surprised. “So you’re...?”

“She’s a writer,” Waller interjected gruffly, speaking for the first time and answering for Willow.

Ryan glanced back at Waller, then turned to Willow again. “You two know each other?”

During introductions earlier, Willow had only given her name, nothing more. It wasn’t strange, really—she and Waller weren’t exactly well acquainted, but they’d met once before and knew each other’s names. Still, when they’d run into each other just now, she’d acted as if she’d never seen him before.

She could just as easily keep pretending with Waller, too.

“I didn’t know,” Willow replied, though in truth, she’d seen it coming.

“But you still managed to get him ten days in lockup,” Ryan said with a wry smile.

For someone like Connor—a spoiled rich kid with connections—even a single day in a holding cell was rare, let alone the full ten days.

Willow’s gaze cooled. “Shame it was only ten.”

“If he tries to bother you again after he gets out, just call the police,” Ryan said, pausing for emphasis, “or call me.”

At that, Waller lengthened his stride, moving up to Willow’s other side.

His voice was calm and steady. “Or you can call me.”
