“Director, please speak for me, you said I had a bright future… My voice trembled as I turned to
him.
The director didn’t even blink. “I was blind.”
“Kirby, you-“I started, but one glance from him, sharp as a blade, shut me up. I really was clutching at straws.
My wolf shrank in my head. Don’t beg him… he wants to tear us apart…
I looked helplessly at Leslie, tears sliding down my swollen cheeks. “Leslie, please… you’re the one who brought me into this business…”
Her eyes went cold, her tone like frost. “Did I tell you to assault someone? Idiot.”
Her pine–scented power rolled over me like a storm. I couldn’t breathe.
She gave me a look of pure disgust, then turned to leave.
Something snapped in my head. I reached out, desperate to stop her. But before my hand even brushed her arm, someone grabbed it and twisted-
Crack.
The sound of bone splintering rang out. Pain burst through me and I screamed, a cry of agony and despair.
Kirby straightened, clapped his hands once, then calmly wiped them on a handkerchief and tossed it aside. His face was as cold as carved ice.
His mint pheromones lashed me like a blizzard, raising every hair on my body. “These hands… always restless.”
Leslie walked out, leaving the rest of them staring.
To them, my misery was deserved. Justice served.
Even Kirby’s defense of Cynthia only cemented their choice.
Michael gave me a token murmur of sympathy before everyone filed out.
Kirby glanced down at me writhing on the floor and gave a soft, contemptuous laugh.

My wolf whimpered weakly. He… he despises us…
“Kirby…” Just as he turned to leave, Cynthia called to him.
“Kirby, L.” She hesitated, the helpless, tear–streaked act gone from her face.
Flat on the floor, I stared.
They knew each other?
My wolf muttered. That scent… she and he were linked all along?
Kirby’s eyes stayed cool, but the faint curve of his mouth showed something close to pleasure. “Well done. Pick any resource you want later. Tell Malach.”
He walked out, tall and distant, like an Alpha patrolling his territory.
I stared up at him, stunned. Cynthia suddenly laughed.
