She set the glass of milk on the table, her cheeks still flushed a deep pink.

“I can barely look Mom in the eye,” Olivia muttered, half hiding behind her hair. “If she hadn’t left so fast, I swear I would’ve tried to crawl into a hole right there.”

Ethan Carter’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Didn’t know you could get embarrassed so easily.”

She shot him a glare. “And you think this is funny?”

Her glare was all watery eyes and rosy cheeks—about as threatening as a kitten.

Ethan thought for a second, then said, “Should I go explain to Mom? Tell her what really happened?”

He actually started to move, like he was really going to do it.

Olivia’s eyes went wide in horror. She grabbed for his sleeve. “Don’t you dare! That’ll just make it worse.”

It wasn’t about whether she believed he would or not. Adelina Lane was already gone, and chasing after her to explain would just scream, “We’re guilty!” and make things even more awkward.

Ethan was grinning now, clearly enjoying himself. He tilted his head down and finally stopped teasing. “Trust me, Mom wants to forget the whole thing even more than you do. Don’t overthink it. Drink your milk, get some sleep. And toughen up a bit, Mrs. Carter.”

Olivia just stared at him. “…Excuse me?”

She liked to think she was pretty thick-skinned. But being misunderstood by Adelina Lane—and then getting a straight-up lecture to her face? Anyone would be mortified.

“Don’t talk to me right now. I need a minute,” she sighed, cupping the warm glass in her hands.

The heat seeped into her palms, chasing away most of the lingering embarrassment, until she finally felt a little more like herself.

When the milk was gone, she washed up, brushed her teeth, and tried to shake the whole thing from her mind before finally crawling into bed.

By the time Ethan finished tidying up, Olivia was already fast asleep.
