From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 124

Ethan Carter pulled his hand away.

Olivia Bennett realized she’d said the wrong thing. She touched her stomach and looked up at Ethan, her voice steady and sincere. “Nothing’s going to happen, okay? I was just talking nonsense earlier—I didn’t mean any of it.”

Ethan’s expression softened. “You shouldn’t say things like that, even as a joke. I mean, I’m not superstitious, but still—don’t go jinxing yourself.”

She’d only been trying to keep Ethan from worrying, and hadn’t really thought before she spoke. Now that he’d called her out on it, Olivia felt a wave of regret. She nodded, owning up to her mistake. “You’re right, I got it.”

Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a slow breath. “Come on, let’s go.”

Olivia nodded. As they walked, she felt his hand slide into hers, warm and reassuring.

As they passed the waiting area, Olivia’s gaze flickered. A memory flashed in her mind—her dad, Mason Bennett, holding her little brother in his arms, the picture of fatherly love.

“Ethan?” she said quietly.

“Yeah?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure, shoot.”

Olivia hesitated for a moment, then finally got the words out. “Do you believe someone can really love just one person their whole life?”

Ethan glanced at her, noticing the furrow between her brows, the uncertainty in her eyes.

He didn’t know what had brought this on, but he squeezed her hand a bit tighter. “Yeah. I do.”

She didn’t comment on his answer, just pressed on, “Can you promise me something?”

Ethan’s dark eyes narrowed, a strange feeling settling in his chest. Something about her tone was off, but he played along. “What is it?”

“If you ever fall for someone else, could you just… tell me?”

Her voice was soft, but it hit Ethan like a sledgehammer—hard and impossible to ignore.

He stopped walking, his gaze intense. “Why are you asking me this? Did something happen?”
