From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 126

"Alright, alright," Nance Buck managed a pale smile. "If your father could see you from heaven, he’d be proud to have a son like you."

Daniel Gill lowered his gaze, gently tucking the blanket around her shoulders. "Get some rest, Mom. Try not to worry about anything."

Nance closed her eyes, her frail hands gripping the blanket tightly, as if she could hold her thoughts at bay. The silence in the hospital room was soon broken by the shrill ring of a cellphone.

Nance opened her eyes. "Is it something about Carter Enterprises?"

Daniel nodded. "Yeah. Work’s been a mess lately."

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Everything needed his attention. Visiting his mother was a rare sliver of time he’d barely managed to carve out.

Nance frowned. "You should go. Carter Enterprises comes first. Don’t waste your time here with me—I’ve got Eve looking after me. I’ll be fine. But listen—don’t let the Bennetts catch wind of this, whatever you do."

Daniel’s eyes flickered, but faced with his mother’s stubborn insistence, he finally stood up. "Alright, you get some rest."

He stepped out, answering the call as he left. His footsteps faded down the hall.

Nance lay there, the corners of her mouth twitching into a bitter smile, tears threatening to spill over.

Mason Bennett—what you took from us, you’re going to have to give back. One way or another.

Ethan Carter had barely pulled out of the hospital parking lot when his phone rang.

It was Evan Dale. Some new emergency with Carter Enterprises’ overseas division.

He put the call on speaker, so Olivia Bennett, sitting in the passenger seat, heard everything.

When the call ended, Olivia turned to him. "If you need to deal with work, just drop me off. I can grab an Uber home."

He shook his head firmly. "No way."
