Olivia Bennett paused, lifting her head from her phone. The knocking at the door had already stopped.
Had she imagined it?
She waited a moment.
Thud, thud, thud!
There it was again.
Nope, she hadn’t misheard. Olivia stood up and walked over to open the door.
“Carter—” Catherine Blair’s voice started out bright and cheerful, but cut off mid-word. The smile she’d probably practiced in the elevator froze on her face as she stared at Olivia in surprise. “Oh. It’s you?”
Olivia recognized her right away.
It was Aileen—the woman Shirley Carter had brought to The Carter Family’s Thanksgiving dinner the other day.
They’d only met once, barely even acquaintances.
Olivia gave her a polite nod, not bothering to pretend they were friends. “Can I help you?”
Catherine didn’t answer right away. She glanced past Olivia, peering into the office.
The place was empty. No sign of Ethan Carter.
Whatever excitement or hope Catherine had brought with her instantly vanished, like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water over her.
She scowled. “Where’s Ethan?”
She wasn’t exactly subtle about her disappointment, and Olivia noticed it easily.
Raising an eyebrow, Olivia replied, “He’s in a meeting. If you need him, you’ll have to wait a bit.”
Catherine obviously didn’t want to leave without seeing him.
She let out a little “Oh,” clinging tightly to the stack of documents in her hands—obviously her excuse for dropping by.
“I’ll just… come back later.”
She turned to go, but then stopped, spinning back around to glare at Olivia. “Why are you here, anyway?”
Compared to how she’d sounded when the door first opened, her tone now was definitely not friendly.
