Lavinia Bennett stood by the glass railing on the second floor of the mall, her gaze cutting through the crowd below and locking on a familiar figure in the distance—Olivia Bennett.
She frowned in disbelief and tugged at the sleeve of the woman next to her. “Mom, look—by the entrance. Isn’t that Olivia Bennett?”
Carmen Gates, busy scrolling through her phone, barely looked up. But when she heard her daughter’s words, she followed Lavinia’s pointed finger, scanning the flow of shoppers coming and going. She checked every face, but saw no sign of Olivia.
“Where?” she asked.
Lavinia pressed her lips together. “She’s already walked out.”
Carmen just shrugged, not even trying to hide her indifference. “Well, let her go. She’s not part of the Bennett family anymore. Even if it was her, what does it matter? She’s none of our business.”
Lavinia narrowed her eyes. “I saw her holding hands with some guy.”
Now, Carmen’s interest was piqued. She arched a brow. “What kind of guy? Don’t tell me she’s clinging to some old rich geezer now?”
Lavinia shook her head. “Couldn’t really see, but he didn’t look old. From the back, he seemed pretty young.”
“Still doesn’t matter,” Carmen scoffed. “She’s just a nobody, no family, no money. What kind of man could she possibly find? For all we know, she’s just someone’s side chick. Enough about her—talking about her just puts me in a bad mood.”
“I just thought it was odd,” Lavinia said, her voice tinged with suspicion. “I asked her to take engagement photos for me and Daniel just yesterday, and today she’s out there hanging on some guy. I hope she’s not up to something.”
Carmen paused, then snorted with a hint of contempt. “She probably just saw you and Daniel getting along so well and grabbed the first guy she could find to show off. Pathetic, really.”
Lavinia’s lips curled into a smug smile. “You’re probably right.”
Carmen grinned. “Forget about her. You and Daniel are doing great—she’ll just eat her heart out.”
Lavinia nodded. “Yeah, let’s not waste time talking about her. I need to pick out a new tie for Daniel.”
Carmen agreed, “He could use one. He’s been running himself ragged lately with the Carter Corporation stuff. Try not to give him a hard time, honey. Be understanding.”
Lavinia rolled her eyes. “I know, Mom. Do you really think I’m that unreasonable?”
