"I’m telling you, I didn’t do it," she huffed, rolling her eyes. "But honestly, Ethan Carter’s got the patience of a saint. He drives you everywhere, picks you up, drops you off. He’s a good guy, you know."

Olivia Bennett just murmured a soft, barely audible, "Mm-hmm."

She pressed her lips together, still puzzled. "But how could I forget something so important?"

Poor Ethan Carter probably made the trip for nothing.

Twelve missed calls. He must have been freaking out.

"What else could it be?" Nannie Bruce teased, her gaze dropping to Olivia’s belly in a not-so-subtle way. "Baby brain, honey. It’s a real thing!"

Olivia shot her a look. "I’m not even due yet."

"Doesn’t matter," Nannie replied, dead serious. "It starts the moment you get that positive test. I mean, look at you—classic symptoms."

Olivia raised an eyebrow, suspicious. "Is that really a thing?"

Nannie nodded with a straight face, not a hint of doubt. "Absolutely."

Olivia let out a frustrated sigh. "Honestly, my memory’s been shot lately. I keep forgetting what I went to get, have to ask Ethan to remind me all the time."

Seeing how earnestly Olivia was taking it, Nannie couldn’t help but laugh. "You actually believed me? I totally made that up."

Olivia groaned. "I knew it."

"Then why were you so serious about it?"

Olivia rolled her eyes again. "Because my memory really has been awful lately."

Nannie shrugged, considering. "Well, maybe pregnancy does mess with your head a bit."

"Maybe."

"Alright, eat up," Nannie said, nudging her plate closer. "Ethan’ll be here to get you soon."

Olivia nodded, trying to push all her scattered thoughts out of her mind and focus on her food.

About twenty minutes later, just as they set down their forks, Olivia’s phone lit up.

She glanced at the caller ID and answered with a swipe.

A moment later, Ethan’s deep, warm voice came through the line. "You finished eating?"
