Lavinia Bennett’s eyes flickered for just a moment, glancing at Claire so quickly it was almost impossible to notice. She pulled out a wry little smile. “Well, here’s hoping you get what you want.”
Claire Camp let out a frustrated sigh. “Yeah, I hope so too, but honestly? Doesn’t feel likely.”
There were just too many people here tonight. And half of them came from families way more influential than hers.
Lavinia’s smile widened, a little more genuine this time, trying to reassure her. “Oh, come on. Sometimes good things happen when you least expect it.”
Claire couldn’t help but wish that was true. She paused, then forced a grin back onto her face. “Alright, let’s just go inside. Enough about that.”
The two of them headed towards the ballroom, totally unaware that a man had appeared behind them at some point.
Carlson Baker stood where he was, eyebrows raised in mild disbelief.
His mom? Playing matchmaker?
God, ever since she found out Ethan Carter got hitched, she’d gone off the deep end. Only his mother would turn her own birthday party into some kind of speed dating event.
He should’ve known—she never cared much about her birthday before. This year, she threw herself a whole elaborate bash.
So this was what she was plotting.
Carlson rubbed his forehead, helpless, and veered off toward the stairs.
Upstairs, Olivia Bennett sat quietly and listened as Adelina Lane and Naomi Barton chatted away, throwing in a comment now and then. The three of them were in the middle of a lively conversation when a sudden knock interrupted them.
Naomi glanced towards the door. “That’s probably our prodigal son.”
She opened it with a practiced sigh.
“Mom.”
Of course, it was him.
Naomi eyed him sternly. “Oh, so you remember where home is?”
Carlson handed her a gift bag. “It’s your birthday, Mom. Of course I came back.”
