Mason Bennett stared at the grand mansion, his face serious as he turned to Carmen Gates and Lavinia Bennett. “Listen, it was no easy feat for me to get us invites to the Baker family’s party. When you’re around Mrs. Baker, be on your best behavior.”

He glanced at them both, lowering his voice, “And remember, the Baker family only entertains the crème de la crème. If you get a chance, mingle with those Olivia-types. And for the love of God, don’t cause any trouble.”

Lavinia peeked through the car window at the sprawling estate, her expression bored.

If Mason hadn’t insisted, she never would’ve come. The Bennetts might have some pull in Cabinda, but compared to the old-money Bakers, they were small potatoes.

Let’s be honest, Mason could dress it up as “networking” all he wanted, but everyone knew it just meant sucking up to the right people.

They stepped out of the car and hadn’t even reached the entrance hall when a female voice called out, “Lavinia!”

She paused, spun around, and finally her eyes lit up. “Claire!”

Claire Camp hurried over, greeting both Lavinia and Carmen before looping her arm through Lavinia’s. “Let’s go in together.”

Mason and Carmen barely looked back, already heading inside.

Lavinia lowered her voice as they walked, “Did you come alone?”

“My folks are already in there. I got caught up at home, so I’m late.” Claire glanced at her friend. “You don’t look thrilled.”

Lavinia checked around, making sure no one was listening, and muttered, “What’s there to be happy about at this kind of party?”

Back in her own circle, everyone danced to her tune. Here at a Baker family gathering, she’d have to do the dancing. She’d only be happy the day Cabinda’s socialites started orbiting around her instead.

Claire sighed. “It’s just how business works. If you wanna make it, you’ve gotta show up for these things. But don’t sweat it—give it a couple of years, and with Daniel Gill in your family, the tables will turn. Soon enough, it’ll be everyone else trying to impress you.”
