Claire Campbell had talked herself into a corner. Gritting her teeth, she snapped, “You’re with her, aren’t you? Whatever you’re up to, you’re both in on it. Who knows what you two snuck in here to do.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, the room buzzed with whispers before Carlson Baker could even react.

“Does she not know who Mr. Baker is? Why else would she say he snuck into his own party?”

“I’ve never heard of someone having to sneak into their own gala. She clearly has no idea what she’s talking about.”

“Oh boy, she must not even know whose house she’s at. This is gonna be a disaster…”

The murmurs swelled, a messy tangle of amusement and disbelief.

Even in the chaos, Claire caught enough to understand—her face went pale, her jaw stiffening inch by inch.

She looked up at Carlson Baker, disbelief etched across her face. “Wait… you’re Carlson Baker?”

Carlson shot her a sidelong glance, clicking his tongue. “Guess I overestimated my fame. Thought everyone knew me, but apparently I need to get out more. Clearly, I’m not nearly as popular as I thought.”

His words sounded like a joke, but there wasn’t a hint of a smile in his eyes or in his voice. Each syllable sliced through Claire like a blade.

Her vision swam. What had she just said? How could he possibly be Carlson Baker? And what was he doing with Olivia Bennett?

Claire’s knees buckled, and if Alice Austin hadn’t caught her arm, she’d have ended up on the floor.

Alice wasn’t doing much better. Her mind was spinning. They’d come to this party hoping Carlson Baker might take notice of Claire, maybe even form an alliance between the Campbells and the Bakers.

Now, before anything even started, they’d already blown it. Forget alliances—at this point, she just prayed the Baker family wouldn’t hold a grudge.

She squeezed Claire’s hand and whispered frantically, “Quick, apologize to Mr. Baker. You hit your head in the kitchen, you’re not thinking straight! Say something before this gets worse.”
