Leaning against the doorway, she watched him for a couple of seconds before walking over, a playful smile curving her lips. “Hard at work, Mr. Carter?”

Ethan looked up, his eyes softening. “Are you hungry?”

Olivia shook her head. “Not really. I’m good.”

He nodded toward the living room. “Why don’t you go take a seat? I’ll call you when everything’s ready.”

She frowned teasingly. “Not even gonna let me help? You know, you helped me out this morning. If I just sit around now, I’ll feel like a total freeloader.”

Ethan handed her a plate. “You can help by putting this on the table. Then go relax.”

She took the plate from him.

Buffalo wings, hot and crispy.

She gave a dramatic sniff. “Wow, that smells amazing.”

“Set it on the table—feel free to try one,” he said with a wink.

Olivia grinned. “Alright, but remember—you’re the one banning me from the kitchen, not the other way around.”

Ethan played along, deadpan. “Yes, I am. I’m taking full responsibility.”

She laughed and walked out.

Later, as she was scrolling through her phone on the couch, Susan popped in to call her for dinner.

The table was set with four dishes and a hearty bowl of clam chowder—everything Olivia loved, and it all looked and smelled delicious.

Suddenly, her mild hunger turned ravenous.

“Wow, Mr. Carter, you’ve really outdone yourself,” she said, giving him a big thumbs-up.

Ethan just rolled his eyes fondly—he was used to her playful compliments by now. He pulled out her chair with a gentlemanly flair. “Sit.”

They both took their seats.

Olivia grabbed a chicken wing and plopped it onto his plate. “A little gift from me to you.”

Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Who’s the gift from, and who’s it for?”

She waved him off. “Don’t overthink it. Just eat.”
