Ethan Carter gave her cheek a gentle squeeze. “You sure you’re not up to something?”
Olivia Bennett shook her head, utterly unbothered. “Nope. Not at all.”
Ethan just sighed, clearly out of arguments. He slid his warm hand around hers. “Alright, let’s head inside.”
Olivia nodded, glancing up just as a sleek black car pulled up behind them, rumbling to a stop.
Ethan’s eyes flicked over too.
Lavinia Bennett and Daniel Gill stepped out.
Daniel’s gaze lingered a moment too long on their joined hands, his expression unreadable.
Lavinia, on the other hand, gave Olivia a quick once-over, Mason Bennett’s warnings echoing in her mind.
She slipped her arm through Daniel’s, dropping her eyes for a beat.
When she looked up again, her face was graced with a sugary-sweet smile. Her voice was honeyed as she said, “Olivia, why don’t you bring Mr. Carter inside with you?”
Olivia barely spared her a glance, then turned to Ethan. “Let’s go.”
“Yeah,” Ethan agreed, and together they headed for the house.
Halfway there, Ethan shifted from holding her hand to wrapping his arm firmly around her shoulders, tucking her close against his side.
Lavinia was left standing in the cold. Her eyes flashed with anger, jaw clenched so tight she nearly chipped a tooth.
She’d already been more than gracious.
Did Olivia really think marrying Ethan Carter made her special?
Just riding his coattails, that’s all.
Lavinia’s glare hardened and, with visible effort, she smoothed her features before turning to Daniel. “Olivia and Mr. Carter seem awfully close, don’t they?”
Daniel’s eyes flickered, the only hint of emotion he showed. “Let’s go in,” he said, voice flat and measured.
