Olivia Bennett had no clue why she was here again, but whatever it was, judging by the look on her face, it couldn’t be good.

She frowned, just as Lavinia Bennett snatched the box of cupcakes out of her hands with a sharp huff. “Give it back,” Lavinia sneered. “You don’t deserve to eat these.”

Carmen Gates hurried in, her voice tight with worry. “What on earth are you doing?”

She reached out, swatting lightly at Lavinia’s arm, looking as if she’d just been tossed onto a hot skillet. Her words came out fast, confused and desperate.

Before she could say more, Carmen glanced at Olivia with an apologetic smile, trying to smooth things over. “Olivia, don’t mind her, she—”

“Mom, stop saying that to her!” Lavinia cut her off, eyes narrowed as she looped her arm through her mother’s, pulling her close. Her tone was icy. “You don’t have to grovel to her. Who does she think she is? Just because Ethan Carter is interested in her, she thinks she’s made it big.”

Carmen shot her daughter a look. “Watch your mouth. Give the cupcakes back to Olivia.”

“No way,” Lavinia retorted, clutching the box even tighter and glaring at Olivia with open disdain. “I’d rather toss these in the trash than let her have them. She doesn’t deserve the treats we brought.”

The words hung in the air.

Carmen was stunned, wishing she could clap a hand over Lavinia’s mouth.

“Enough!” she barked, face flushed with a mix of anxiety and anger. “Do you hear yourself right now? Did you forget what your father told you?”

Olivia watched the mother-daughter back-and-forth, her patience running thin. She crossed her arms, her voice cold. “If you want to take the cupcakes, just go.”

“But—”

Carmen barely got the word out before Lavinia yanked on her arm again, interrupting hotly, “Mom, stop talking to her like that.”
