From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 211

“I’m sorry,” she said, the words slipping off her tongue so easily, like she’d practiced them in front of a mirror. But there wasn’t a hint of regret on her face. Not even close.

Instead, she stood there, hand over her lips, wearing a smirk and practically waiting for me to fall apart. Her blue eyes glittered with laughter, and, honestly, she looked like the cat who’d finally gotten the cream. After days of holding it all in, Franklin—God, she’d let it all out now. She was practically giddy.

Olivia Bennett raised her eyes, meeting the little show with the same icy calm she’d had all week. If she was hurt, she sure as hell didn’t show it. “Are you done?” she asked quietly.

Lavinia Bennett blinked, her eyebrows arching up in surprise. She’d clearly expected more of a reaction. She opened her mouth to respond, but Olivia cut her off with a voice sharp as a winter wind. “You can leave now.”

The words hit Lavinia like a slap. She glared, her jaw tight with anger, giving Olivia a once-over like she was measuring up an enemy. Maybe Olivia was tougher than she’d thought.

But so what? Lavinia’s sneer said it all—she clearly didn’t think much of Olivia’s endurance. As if, in the end, Olivia was just something to be played with.

Lavinia turned her mouth down in disgust, then smiled slyly. “You really think we wanted to come here?” she scoffed. “Honestly, this trip did wonders for my mood. Right, Mom?”

She glanced at Carmen Gates, who couldn’t even meet her gaze. Carmen’s emotions were all tangled up—she’d spent days convincing herself to do right by Olivia. But now? It felt like she’d just signed up for misery, with nothing to show for it.

Lavinia, not noticing or not caring, looped her arm in her mother’s and shook it a little. “Come on, Mom, you see it now, don’t you? No more groveling, no more tiptoeing around her. We can go back to how things were, like we should.”

Carmen finally snapped out of her daze, lips pressed together. “Let’s go,” she said quietly, her head spinning. She wanted nothing more than to get out of there and go home.
