Olivia Bennett’s eyes darkened the moment she heard Mason Bennett’s name.
“I’m not ready to let him off the hook,” she said, dropping her gaze. “Do you think I’m being too harsh?”
She wanted to see Mason and his wife at each other’s throats, tearing their lives apart.
Ethan Carter wrapped his arms around her, sighing. “Harsh? Not really. I just didn’t realize you’d been planning all this in silence.”
“Every time I think about what they did, it just eats me up inside.” Olivia’s voice was cold, brittle with anger. “I wish they’d pay for it right now.”
But sadly, they had no evidence. There was nothing they could do.
Ethan’s heart ached for her. “People like that get what’s coming to them. Karma always finds a way.”
Olivia snuggled into his chest, breathing in his familiar scent, slowly feeling her stormy heart settle.
She yawned. “I’m so tired. I just want to sleep.”
Ethan stroked her back gently. “Goodnight, Liv.”
“Goodnight.”
Olivia was never one to have trouble sleeping in a new bed—and with Ethan next to her, she slept soundly.
But sometime after midnight, she woke up with a start, her calf seizing in a sharp cramp.
She winced, brow furrowed, and couldn’t help but cry out.
Ethan shot up, panic in his voice. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“My leg—cramp—hurts so much…” Olivia whimpered, kicking out her leg.
Ethan quickly flicked on the bedside lamp, cupping her leg in his hands. He found her calf and gently grabbed her ankle, stretching her foot. “Here?”
The pain eased almost instantly at his touch, and Olivia felt relief wash over her. Her voice was raspy with sleep and a little teary. “Yeah, it’s much better now.”
Ethan’s voice was soft. “Try to get some more sleep. I’ll massage it for you.”
“Mm-hmm,” Olivia murmured, already drifting back toward sleep.
Ethan rubbed her calf for a while, then slipped out of bed. He came back with a warm washcloth and pressed it gently to her muscle, massaging her until he was sure the cramp was gone. He swapped the cloth for a fresh warm one a couple of times before finally crawling back into bed. He kissed her forehead and held her close as they both drifted off again.
The next morning, Olivia blinked awake to a room bathed in soft pink light—so different from what she was used to.
