From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 28

She decided to just let her mind go blank. With a sigh, Olivia Bennett closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, the smallest rustle beside her stirred Olivia from her dreams.

She blinked blearily, only to find herself staring right into Ethan Carter’s face.

Suddenly, she was a lot less sleepy.

With a frown of embarrassment, she mumbled, “I…”

“I get it,” Ethan replied, flashing her a faint smile.

Seriously?

He was already picking up on her unspoken words.

Instead of getting out of bed, Ethan pulled her closer, his arm draped over her back, gently patting her in a soothing rhythm. “Go back to sleep,” he murmured. “It’s barely six-thirty.”

His movements were so natural, like he’d done this a thousand times, but it made Olivia tense up. She lay stiff in his embrace, hardly daring to move as his cool, clean scent drifted over her.

No idea how much time passed—though she was still a little thrown by his behavior, sleepiness eventually won out. Olivia found a comfortable spot and let herself drift off again, warm and safe.

When she woke up the second time, it was nearly three hours later.

Ethan was already gone.

She hurried through her morning routine and made her way downstairs, drawn by the sound of clattering dishes in the kitchen.

“Mr. Carter—” she started, stepping into the kitchen.

But the words died on her lips. Instead of Ethan, a woman in her fifties—wearing a cheerful floral apron—stood at the counter.

The woman wiped her hands on her apron, offering Olivia a warm but slightly reserved smile. “You must be Olivia. Mr. Carter’s already left for the Carter Group offices.”

Susan had worked in the Carter house for five years. Ethan had always lived alone in this huge place, quiet and reserved, a kind of maturity unusual for someone his age. He was nearly twenty-eight now, still no sign of settling down. Forget the Carter family—Susan herself was starting to worry on his behalf.

Now, with a possible “lady of the house” finally under this roof, Susan felt it was her duty to make Olivia feel welcome.

Looking down at the breakfast spread—scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, fresh-baked croissants, and a bowl of mixed berries—Olivia realized these really were all her favorites.

She thought back to yesterday, when Ethan had ordered a table full of breakfast options. Was he trying to figure out what she liked?

Either way, she couldn’t help but laugh, her eyes sparkling with amusement.

Susan took Olivia’s smile as a sign that she was enjoying herself, and decided right then to keep singing Ethan’s praises whenever she could.

Over breakfast, Olivia learned a lot about the Carter household from Susan. She’d originally been hired to cook all Ethan’s meals, but given his habits, she’d spent far more time handling errands and keeping the house in order—especially his private study and bedroom, which were always off-limits to everyone else.

It seemed life in the Carter house was about to get a lot more interesting.
