As the two women chatted, Ethan Carter was already making his way over.
“Olivia,” he called out, eyes fixed on Olivia Bennett.
She glanced up at him. “Give me a sec,” she replied, then turned and headed for the back of the car.
Nannie Bruce shot Ethan a wary look, her brow furrowed, before following Olivia to the trunk. Olivia popped it open.
The bouquet was still there, perfectly intact and undamaged.
Nannie bent down, picked up the flowers, and handed them to Olivia. “Promise me, no matter what, you won’t ever put yourself second just for Franklin, okay?”
Olivia accepted the bouquet, looking solemn. “I promise.”
But Nannie still looked uneasy. “If anything happens, you better call me. If you don’t, I swear I’ll stop talking to you!”
“I got it, I got it,” Olivia said with a smile.
Only then did Nannie reluctantly get in the car. She rolled down the window and, leaning out, called, “Don’t forget what I said!”
Olivia couldn’t help but laugh, feeling touched at the same time. She nodded, extra serious.
The car started up and soon disappeared down the street.
Olivia finally turned to face Ethan.
He looked unusually serious, peering down at her with concern. “Olivia, there’s nothing going on with me and her. I waited here for you, and she just showed up. I was the one who called security to have her leave.”
He sounded like he was pleading his case.
Olivia just nodded, calm as ever. “I believe you.”
It wasn’t like she didn’t know Catherine Blair. If something had been going on, she’d have found out by now.
Ethan’s eyes darkened a little. “I just didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.”
“I won’t,” Olivia said, grinning. “Didn’t I already tell you? I trust you.”
“Your friend doesn’t.”
He’d overheard the whole conversation.
