The bathroom door clicked shut behind her, and only then did Olivia Bennett start her morning routine.
By the time she emerged, Ethan Carter was already dressed—crisp shirt, tailored navy suit, tie perfectly knotted. He looked every bit the part of a Wall Street executive, sharp and full of energy.
Olivia eyed him with a teasing grin. “Big meeting at Carter Group today?”
Ethan shook his head, his gaze softening as it landed on her. “Nope. Today’s all about you.”
Olivia’s lips curled with amusement. “Well then, let me go get changed too.”
She knew he was planning something for her birthday, so she’d picked out her favorite dress: a long, floral number paired with a soft white blouse. The effect was effortlessly graceful, a little old-fashioned, and sweet.
When she stepped out of the walk-in closet, Ethan was waiting, eyes lingering on her. “You look beautiful.”
A compliment straight out of the gate—Olivia couldn’t hide her smile. “Thanks. You clean up pretty nice yourself.”
He reached for her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Let me do your hair?”
She laughed and plopped down in front of the vanity. “Let me put on a little makeup first, then you can play stylist.”
He nodded, looking almost too eager.
Olivia kept it simple: a light touch of blush, a few flicks of mascara, and a swipe of soft peach lipstick that brought out the glow in her cheeks. When she was satisfied, she looked up at Ethan, chin tilted in question. “How’s this?”
Her makeup was subtle, her complexion fresh and rosy, lashes long and curled. The lipstick was just enough to brighten her smile without being too bold.
Ethan’s eyes were fixed on her lips, his gaze a little intense. Olivia was just about to say something when he leaned in, bracing his hands on the vanity, closing the distance between them.
His nose brushed hers, their breaths mingling, and then his lips found hers—soft, lingering, careful like he was savoring a secret.
