Adelina Lane spoke clearly and calmly, her words making perfect sense as she tried to reason with him.
Ethan Carter’s gaze drifted to Olivia Bennett. “I can’t just leave her like this. I wouldn’t sleep a wink if I went home. Besides, Grandma doesn’t even know what happened yet. Someone has to explain everything to her.”
Adelina seemed to consider this for a moment, her eyes thoughtful. Then she turned to Lance Carter. “Why don’t you head home and talk to Mom? Be careful how you tell her—don’t let her worry too much, okay?”
“I just can’t leave Ethan and Olivia alone right now. I’ll stay here tonight, keep an eye on both of them.”
Lance hesitated. Honestly, he wasn’t thrilled about leaving either. But Adelina was, without a doubt, the best choice to stay.
He finally nodded. “I’ll come back tomorrow morning.”
Adelina gave a little hmm of agreement, then added, “Could you have the cook whip up something nourishing for Olivia? Maybe some chicken soup or mashed potatoes—something easy on her stomach?”
“Sure,” Lance said, and headed out.
There was a little pull-out cot beside the hospital bed. Adelina insisted Ethan use it, and eventually, he caved and lay down. She herself settled onto the sofa for the night, wrapping up in a scratchy hospital blanket.
Morning arrived with a pale shaft of sunlight sneaking in through the gap in the curtains. Somewhere out in the hallway, footsteps echoed quietly.
Olivia blinked awake, her room still dim in the early light. She turned her head and saw someone lying on the cot next to her bed, a familiar silhouette even in the shadows.
It was Ethan. She recognized him immediately.
Yesterday’s memories came rushing back, her mind echoing with a baby’s cries.
She frowned, clutching the blanket tightly.
Ethan had barely slept all night, his rest uneasy and shallow. The slightest sound from her bed jolted him awake.
He opened his eyes as if on instinct. “Olivia?” he called softly, almost uncertain.
She heard him, turned her head again, and before she could answer, Ethan was already throwing back the covers and hurrying over.
