“Do you know why I called you all here today?”
Abbott Green froze for a moment, then quickly shook his head. “No, sir. I don’t.”
“If you don’t know, maybe you should ask your precious daughter.”
His voice was low and heavy, carrying a pressure that made Abbott’s heart skip a beat. He glanced at Catherine Blair, who was sitting beside him, her face suddenly pale as a sheet. A bad feeling rose in his chest. He frowned and barked, “What the hell did you do this time, Catherine?”
Catherine’s eyes were rimmed red as she shot a quick glance at Ethan Carter. Her teeth dug into her bottom lip, leaving a mark, but she said nothing.
A few days ago, after Ethan Carter had ignored her, she’d gone home in a daze, thinking that was the end of it. She’d been dragging herself around, head hanging low, until today—when one of Ethan Carter’s bodyguards had shown up at their door, saying Mr. Carter wanted to see the whole family.
She’d thought maybe, after a few days to cool off, Ethan wanted to talk things over. Maybe there was still a chance. But the moment she walked in, he greeted her with that icy stare and a voice sharp enough to cut steel.
She’d have to be a fool not to get it now. Ethan Carter wasn’t interested in her—he was here to settle the score.
Abbott Green might be careless about most things, but he knew trouble when he saw it. The look on Catherine’s face said it all—she’d done something to piss Ethan off. And if Ethan Carter had called the whole family here, it wasn’t a small thing. She must’ve crossed a line.
Abbott felt his world spin. Anger flared hot in his chest. “Catherine, you’re really something, aren’t you? Did you seriously think you could mess with Mr. Carter and just walk away?”
