Olivia Bennett’s eyes went wide with shock. “How do you even know that? Did you bug my studio or something?”
Ethan Carter just shrugged, his voice light but his words dropping like a bomb. “She’s my mom.”
It hit Olivia like a thunderclap. She stared at Ethan, her big brown eyes full of disbelief, her mouth falling open in shock.
For a long beat, she could only gape at him, as if she’d just heard the juiciest piece of gossip in all of Manhattan. Finally, she managed to stammer, “Wait, who are you talking about?”
Her voice trembled with nerves, worried she’d misheard.
Ethan pulled the car to the curb and turned to look at her, his expression serious. “Her name’s Adelina Lane. She’s my mom. And, well, now she’s yours too.”
There it was, clear as day.
Suddenly, everything made sense. No wonder Adelina had been so warm and chatty from the moment they’d met, looking at Olivia like she was the daughter she’d always wanted. No wonder she’d been so flustered when she found out Olivia was pregnant, fussing over her like a hen with her only chick. No wonder she’d shown up today with homemade chicken noodle soup, insisting Olivia drink every last spoonful.
No wonder she was polite with Helen Adams and the others, but always went out of her way for Olivia. It all added up now.
Olivia’s long lashes fluttered as she opened her mouth, searching for words that just wouldn’t come.
Ethan reached over and took her hand in his, his touch gentle and reassuring. “She means well, you know. She just wanted to meet you, but she didn’t want to scare you off. You don’t have to worry.”
