Chapter 117 Managed to Get Close to Zaden
The next morning, Athena was woken up by the shrill ring of her phone. Half–asleep, she fumbled for it and answered groggily, “Hello?”
“Athena! You won’t believe it–the Belmonts retracted their statement!
“Did you see it?

“They’ve completely reversed what they said yesterday. Now they claim you and Lewis separated peacefully. Sure, it doesn’t sound entirely sincere, but at least your name’s cleared.”
Athena snapped fully awake.
The Belmonts have actually taken back all the vicious online rumors about me? That seems impossible.
After all, she knew Bridget had never been merciful. If she had been even halfway decent, she wouldn’t have schemed against Athena the way she had or slandered her reputation.
Athena hurriedly said, “Wait, let me check.”
She opened the news feed.
Sure enough, the Belmonts‘ statement from the previous day was everywhere.
Reading it, she was stunned. It was as if the entire family had been possessed.
First, they denied the earlier claims that Athena had been Lewis’s “contract maid,” calling it completely fabricated and claiming ignorance of who had spread such lies.
Then they stated that Lewis and Athena had separated peacefully due to “irreconcilable differences.”
They had merely been passing through each other’s lives. Now that they were divorced amicably, they would part ways, live their own lives, and have no further ties.
On the surface, it seemed like a clean, happy ending.
Yet Athena couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. The Belmonts weren’t the type to just let things go.
Have they lost their minds?
She turned the problem over and over in her mind, trying to understand why the Belmonts had suddenly changed their tune.

Finished
The statement felt strange, as if some greater force had forced their hand–something that made smearing her seem trivial in comparison.
“Well? Finished reading it?” Harriet’s voice buzzed in her ear.
Then, lowering her tone, Harriet muttered conspiratorially, “Ahem the end of it.”
…
I have a feeling this isn’t
Zaden had pushed them harder, though Harriet wasn’t sure how far.
Before she could say more, Athena’s doorbell rang.
“Wait, someone’s here. I’ll check.”
She set her phone down and went to the door. The sight outside made her tense. “Bridget, what are you doing here?”
She was divorced from Lewis now and had no reason to extend any courtesy to Bridget, especially after the bitterness of their last encounter.
Athena quickly ended her call with Harriet.
Keeping her distance, she fixed Bridget with a sharp gaze.
“Athena! What will it take for you to finally leave the Belmonts alone?” Bridget burst out, her voice laced with accusation.
Leave the Belmonts alone? What did I do?
Leaning against the doorframe, Athena let out a cold laugh and curled her lip. “Bridget, if you’ve lost your mind, go get it checked out. Don’t start trouble here, or I’ll call the police.”
Athena’s mocking expression humiliated Bridget, but she had no choice.
If she didn’t settle this, the Belmonts were screwed. She was determined to settle this once and for all.
Gritting her teeth, Bridget suddenly dropped to her knees with a thud.
“I know you still hate Lewis, but what’s done is done. On paper, you two are divorced. Let’s put this behind us. I’m begging you. Just tell Mr. Barton to let the Belmonts go.”
Athena’s brows knitted.
In Bridget’s words, she caught a hint of the truth. Someone named Mr. Barton was pressuring the Belmonts, forcing these sudden moves. That explained why the statements had appeared.
