The two of them sat in silence for a long moment before Zaden finally broke the silence. “About what happened today … if there’s anything you want to say or ask for, now’s the time.”
He meant their marriage.
After turning it over in her mind all night, Athena had come to terms with it–mostly.
She wasn’t resisting as much now, though lingering doubts still tugged at her.
“So… who is Teri’s mother?” she asked carefully. “I’m not trying to dig into your past, but if she ever comes back, I want to know so I can step aside.”
Athena’s caution came from old wounds.
After everything with Lewis and Nina, she had no tolerance for surprises like this.
Zaden’s brow furrowed. His gaze drifted toward the window, lost in thought. His voice was low when he answered, “I don’t know.”
Athena laughed incredulously. “What do you mean you don’t know?”
Seriously, how could he not know who he had a kid with?
Zaden’s face remained serious.
…
He nodded. “At the time I was set up. I wasn’t fully aware of what was happening. I remember only a vague outline. By the time I came to, she was gone.”
Athena hadn’t expected Zaden to have a past like that.
She’d always assumed he’d had a girlfriend, things went wrong, and Teri ended up growing up without her mother.
But it turned out that he didn’t know who Teri’s mother was.
Well, that settled that.
Having asked what she needed, Athena felt it was only fair to offer the same. “Then … have any requests of me?”
do you
“No,” he replied without hesitation.
Athena pressed, frowning. “Don’t hold back. Just tell me. As long as it’s reasonable, I’ll do my
best.”

Zaden looked at her determination and couldn’t help but smile. “You’re remarkable,” he said.
Athena felt her cheeks flush from his compliment.
They were simple words, but coming from him, they carried weight–encouraging, magnetic, and somehow unforgettable.
“I’m going back to bed,” she said softly.
“Goodnight,” he replied.
“Goodnight.”
Athena returned to the bedroom, rolled onto her side, and tried to sleep.
But all she could see was Zaden’s faint smile, hear his voice echoing in her mind, You’re remarkable.
His tone lingered–rich, magnetic, and almost mesmerizing.
Great. Now I definitely can’t sleep.
The next morning, Athena dragged herself out of bed, with dark circles under her eyes.
At the breakfast table, Zaden was already there. When he saw her, his voice was gentle. “Athena, come eat.”
She sat, still dazed.
He poured her a glass of milk and placed a sandwich in front of her. Athena’s mind was foggy, watching these small gestures.
He hadn’t done things like this before, not with such natural ease–but now, after agreeing to marry her, he suddenly had.
“Once you finish, we’ll head to city hall to register,” he said.
Athena nearly choked on her milk. She quickly set the glass down. “Got it!”
The bedroom door opened, and Teri padded out in cartoon pajamas.
She froze when she saw them, eyes wide, glancing between Athena and Zaden. “Sweetheart, you’re up? Come sit and have breakfast,” Athena said warmly.
