Chapter 105 The Waiting Game
Caroline recognized him by his clothes.
She smirked. Reese must be losing sleep by now.
But the real fun hadn’t even started yet.

She remembered clearly how, in her past life, the Lowlands had gotten powerful for a while.
It was all thanks to someone important backing them.
Back then, she had almost frozen to death during the deep freeze. They had kindly come to save her.
In truth, they just wanted to check her family’s heirloom jewelry and see if there were any other storage spaces hidden among them.
She still remembered that Jonathan survived just fine in that life. He had gone to the shelter and soon rejoined his family.
In this life, Jonathan hadn’t gone to the shelter.
That meant his family would soon be looking for him and were bound to come knocking.
And when Patricia saw the frozen corpse of her favorite grandson lying outside, Caroline wondered how she’d react.
Caroline smiled coldly. She still had a special gift waiting for them.
Something about Reese.
A week after the deep freeze hit, no one from the 66th floor went downstairs. They rarely left their apartment.
One day, Erica came up to see Caroline.
The government hadn’t sent rescue teams that day, and panic spread fast.
She frowned deeply as she said, “We decided to break open every door in this building to search for food and warm clothes.”
Erica’s lips were turning blue from the cold. She was shivering when she told her this.

Caroline looked at her and the two trembling young people behind her. She told them icily, “Do whatever you want. Just remember, it has nothing to do with us on the 66th floor.”
She was about to shut the door when Erica shouted, “Do you even know someone froze to death last night?”
During sudden drops in temperature, people could die in their sleep. Even with warm clothes nearby, they were too dazed to move or light a fire in time. That was the terrifying thing about a world frozen overnight.
That was the true horror of the apocalypse’s deep freeze: death could come quietly in the middle of the night.
Caroline raised an eyebrow. “Is that my problem?”
Erica clenched her jaw when Caroline wouldn’t budge. Finally, she left with her people.
Caroline had no interest in that woman.
Their group on the 66th floor had enough supplies to last for now. None of them wanted to get dragged into anyone else’s mess.
As long as no one bothered them, their plan was simple–stay hidden through the deep freeze, at least for a month or two.
Of course, that didn’t mean lying around doing nothing.
They agreed to train together every day–sparring, running drills, and keeping their minds and bodies sharp for whatever might come next.
Every morning, Caroline got up early. She made herself a cup of hot coffee, bundled up in heavy winter gear, and began her daily workout.
It wasn’t just to stay fit–it was her way of keeping discipline and patience.
After training came breakfast, and then came her usual chaos: playing with her dog and her
bird.
Ever since the strange mutation, Jet had changed completely.
The bird was now nearly two feet long–far too big to perch on Caroline’s shoulder. It usually stood on Raven’s back instead.
The sight of the two together–a sleek black dog and a proud gray–blue bird–was oddly entertaining.

Jet’s claws were razor sharp, and his beak was curved and strong.

His feathers, once plain gray, now shimmered with faint shades of blue, giving him a bold and powerful look.
On top of his head grew a single blue–violet plume. It quivered every time Jet spoke–a small, funny detail that made Caroline smile despite herself.
The outer feathers were thick, but underneath them was a soft, dense layer of down that kept the bird perfectly warm.
Since growing that second coat, Jet no longer feared the cold.
Unfortunately, it was still as noisy as ever. All day long, it chirped beside Caroline’s ear and complained about Raven.
“Raven bullied me! Human, save me!”
“Raven said he’s going to roast me! Human, save me!”
