Raven was powerful, no doubt about that. But letting him use too much of that power wasn’t a good idea.
If this kept up, she really couldn’t afford to keep him anymore.
A few calm days passed.
That night, Caroline woke up shivering from the cold again.
She jumped out of bed and quickly filled every stove with firewood from her storage space.
When she looked outside the floor–to–ceiling window, everything was covered in white.
It was already dawn. The sun had just started to rise, turning the falling snowflakes into a bright silver glow.
The wind carried the snow down in thick, endless sheets–like a giant white curtain sweeping across the world.
A snowstorm was coming.
Just then, Caroline heard loud banging on the stairwell door.
She threw her coat on, grabbed Raven, and rushed out.
Kay and Tyler were already there, bundled up from head to toe.
At the stairs, she heard Erica crying outside.
“Please! Please give us some firewood! Those animals broke into our place! They took everything! My husband–he’s freezing to death! Please, I’m begging you!”
Caroline stared at her. Erica was wrapped in layer after layer of blankets, even dragging her bed quilt behind her, tied around her with rope.
That was how ordinary people survived the apocalypse–no fancy fur coats, just whatever they could wrap around themselves to stay warm.
“What’s that got to do with us?” Caroline said coldly, then shut the door.
Outside, Erica broke down screaming, pounding on it.

But no one opened the door again.
No one answered. No one helped.

Tyler said nothing. He just turned back to his apartment, half–asleep like he was jolted up from
his nap.
Kay stayed beside Caroline and whispered, “Before all this, Erica was part of building management. Everyone liked her. She smiled at everyone, worked fast, and was always polite. I never thought … after the world ended, she’d turn out like this.”
Kay didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t have to. Caroline understood.
Kay had lived here longer. She knew more of what people used to be and how they’d changed.
But to Caroline, Erica was just another stranger. Another person to be careful of in this broken world.
When everyone went back to their apartment, Erica was still outside crying.
Her pleas turned into curses.
She shouted that Caroline and her friends had no conscience, that they were heartless, and that they were letting people die. She even screamed that if her husband froze to death, the blood would be on them.
Inside, Jet’s sharp bird ears picked up every word. The little bird got so angry he started shouting back, squawking insults in return.
He flapped his wings and jabbed his beak at the wooden perch Caroline had made for him, cursing back in his own chirpy, furious way.
Jet’s beak pecked the ground so hard it made a furious bang, bang, bang.
“I’ll peck you to death for calling my human stupid!
“Don’t leave! Just wait until I get out there; I’ll knock you flat!
“I can’t take this anymore! I’m gonna explode!”
Caroline finally grabbed Jet by the head. “Enough already! Stop hopping around, and quit with the mighty talk. Ever since you watched that dramatic show this afternoon, all you’ve learned is how to act like a wannabe hero!”

Jet kept hopping angrily, ready to go peck Raven’s fur.
But one sharp look from Raven sent him scurrying off in fear.
Meanwhile, Erica’s shouting outside only got worse.
