Chapter 149 The Mutant Rats
Just as they were about to open another warehouse, Raven suddenly darted over.
The dog bared his teeth at the building ahead, his face twisted with a low growl.

After spending so much time with Raven, Caroline had learned to read his expressions.
“There’s something inside,” she said quietly.
At that moment, she remembered what Dyson had said earlier with that strange half–smile
–“Be careful out there.”
Sure enough, the moment she stepped up to the warehouse door, she heard something slam against it from the inside. Then came the sharp sound of gnawing and squeaks that made her skin crawl.
“Rats,” Tyler said beside her. “And there’s more than one.”
Neither of them wanted to take unnecessary risks, so they decided to check the other warehouses first.
So far, Caroline had emptied two warehouses, and they had just cleared out another one together. Dyson’s team had already emptied one before that.
Out of the six original warehouses, only two remained.
When Tyler had checked the two warehouses Caroline had emptied earlier, he didn’t seem suspicious.
Caroline had planned it that way—she knew he didn’t realize Dyson’s group had been going back and forth, so he would assume those warehouses had been cleared out by them.
But surprisingly, the last two warehouses both had rats inside.
Caroline and Tyler exchanged serious looks.
“Are we doing this?” Tyler asked bluntly.
“Yeah.”
Leaving the food here just for those mutant pests to eat would be a total waste.
Raven pressed close to Caroline’s leg, his body tense and ready, as if guarding her.

Caroline noticed again how proud and stubborn he was. He liked to tease her when things were calm, but whenever danger came, he was the first to protect her.
Tyler stepped forward, gripping a huge machete in one hand and a pistol strapped to his waist. He raised the blade and smashed open the thick iron lock on the warehouse door.
The lock looked new, not rusty or corroded like the ones on the earlier doors.
That meant Dyson’s group must have discovered the mutant rats before them. They probably fought the creatures, then sealed them inside afterward.
As soon as the door swung open, three dark shapes leapt out.
Raven jumped high and bit one midair, shaking it hard.
Tyler swung his machete down, slicing another rabbit–sized mutant rat clean in half.
Caroline’s hidden blade flashed in the air, cutting the third one’s head clean off.
Silence fell again.
That was when Caroline understood–the three rats had each attacked one of them on
purpose.
They’d been testing their strength.
She turned on her headlamp and pointed the beam inside. Dozens of glowing red eyes stared back at her from the dark.
One of them stood out. It was larger than the rest, about the size of a small dog, covered in white fur. It stood upright in the center of the warehouse on two legs, almost like a person.
It didn’t flinch. It just stared straight at her and Tyler, calm and cold.
Caroline noticed something else–its eyes were blue,
The same blue as the light particles Raven had absorbed from the storage space earlier.
“This rat … it’s different. It must’ve evolved some kind of ability,” Caroline thought.
Now that the light filled the warehouse, she could see the whole space clearly.
It looked like the others–rows of white sacks filled with corn and beans.
But these creatures, after mutating, seemed to understand how valuable the food was. They
