Chapter 150 The Swarm
Chapter 150 The Swarm
“Squeak, squeak, squeak!”
The big rat in the middle let out a series of sharp cries, faster and angrier than before.
But nothing happened.
No other rats moved. None even made a sound.
Then the wind picked up.
It howled through the air, sharp and cold in their ears.
The foul stench of the warehouse rats filled their noses.

Caroline saw Raven tense up beside her, ears straight and twitching, nose wrinkling hard.
She knew Raven’s hearing and sense of smell were extremely sharp. But now, with the howling wind and that awful smell, he couldn’t catch the tiny changes around them. He looked anxious and uneasy.
Something’s not right. Something’s definitely happening, Caroline thought.
Just then, she saw Raven suddenly leap into the air, letting out a pained yelp.
“Watch your feet!” Tyler shouted beside her.
Caroline looked down–and froze. Tiny baby rats, each no bigger than a peanut, were crawling across the snow. Their skin was pale pink, covered in a thin layer of almost see–through white fuzz. In the snow, they were nearly invisible!
They were so small that they made no sound when they moved.
With the wind howling and the stench in the air, even Raven hadn’t noticed them coming.
The tiny rats were climbing fast up Caroline’s and Tyler’s legs, jaws open wide to reveal needle–like teeth. One of them bit into Raven’s leg, drawing blood.
There were hundreds of newborn rats, squirming and crawling everywhere.
Rats could reproduce after only two months. Each litter could have five or six babies- sometimes up to 20.

And they bred again and again, often getting pregnant while still nursing the last litter.
These rats must have been living well near the warehouse, because they’d developed the ability to breed early. Or maybe their mutation made them evolve faster in reproduction.
Caroline’s clothes were high quality, and she winced as she saw two large holes torn in her pants.
If her pant legs hadn’t been tight, those little things would have crawled inside by now, and that would’ve been a nightmare.
Tyler was slapping the baby rats off his body nonstop.
When he saw how quickly they were crawling, he dove to the ground and rolled hard, shaking them off.
Their thick clothes gave them some protection–but poor Raven wasn’t so lucky. His fur gave the rats something to cling to. He yelped as they bit into his skin again and again.
He clawed at them and used his teeth to rip off the ones clinging to him like parasites.
But the baby rats seemed to realize he was the easiest target–soft and exposed, with no defense. More than half of them swarmed toward him.
Within seconds, Raven’s big body was covered in a writhing mass of pink creatures.
“Raven!” Caroline shouted and ran toward him.
She didn’t notice that, back in the warehouse, the rat king had started to move again.
It let out a few deep, low squeaks–quiet, but enough for nearby rats to hear.
Five or six huge rats slipped out of the warehouse, creeping toward them.
One of them lunged straight for Caroline’s neck, but she reacted instantly and blew its head off with a shot.
Another had already circled behind her.
She spun around and took it out with her knife.
But two more rushed at Raven, biting deep into his neck.
Raven roared in pain. Seeing Tyler rolling on the ground earlier, he tried to do the same, hoping to crush them.
