Caroline finally understood why every dead animal here had been picked clean. These disgusting things had eaten them all.
Maybe they could sense the warmth of living flesh, because the two giant maggots began crawling toward her and Raven.
Their pale bodies twisted and wiggled, inching forward slowly. They were slow, painfully slow. There was no way they could catch up.
After running a bit, Caroline realized that aside from being gross, they weren’t dangerous. That eased her nerves a little.
Still, she would rather not stick around. Who knew what else might be hiding here? She ran to the far corner of the room. Without bothering to check the wooden desk, she put it straight into her storage space.
Then she grabbed several old wooden racks nearby and stored those too.
Each shelf had small decorated boxes on it. Caroline didn’t have time to look. She just swept
them all in.
She even took a few taller racks to organize her storage space later.
But when she reached for the last one, something pricked her hand.
“Ouch!” She looked down and found herself bleeding.
Raising her head, she saw a small cactus sitting on the top shelf.
It was only the size of her palm, but it glowed a strange shade of red.
The needles on it were trembling slightly, as if trying to sense direction–like they were scanning for threats.
A mutant cactus! Thankfully, a weak one. It wasn’t any danger to her.
Caroline wasted no time. She tossed it into the storage space too.
Then, without warning, the entire floor began to shake.

:
It felt like something massive–hundreds of somethings–was moving.
Raven instantly stepped in front of her, shielding her with his body, growling low.
Caroline looked around in panic but couldn’t tell where the shaking came from.

She shone her headlamp across the room–then tilted it upward. Her stomach turned. Thousands of white, squirming maggots covered the ceiling.
For a moment, her scalp went numb.
The ceiling wasn’t white at all.
It was a solid sheet of mutant maggots clinging together that gave the illusion of white.
No wonder Raven had been uneasy earlier, glancing around like he could sense something nearby but couldn’t find where it was.
Those things had been sleeping.
Until her blood hit the air.
The scent had woken them.
“Raven–move! Hurry!”
Caroline shouted, her voice trembling.
The sight made Caroline’s skin crawl. Even standing there, she felt her whole body tense with disgust.
She had already run to the far end of the giant room–nearly a hundred feet from the exit. Going back would take time.
But before she could even move, a mutant maggot dropped straight from the ceiling!
Caroline heard a sickening splatter.
A bloated, white creature hit the ground beside her, rolled twice, then twisted its head toward her and began to crawl.
Its thick, greasy body had so much fat that falling from high up didn’t even hurt it.
Then came more. “Splat! Splat! Splat!”

One after another, more maggots fell from above. One almost landed on Caroline’s head.
When she looked up, the ceiling above her was crawling with hundreds, maybe thousands of them, inching along and dropping down at random.
