The moment those things fell from the ceiling and started wriggling across the floor, the whole room filled with a disgusting rotten stench.
Caroline quickly pulled a face mask from her storage space and slipped it on.
A few steps away, Raven darted toward the corner. Caroline followed his gaze. There, among the crawling maggots, something was glowing.
It was a dinosaur egg.
Her mind spun. That thing had to be a fossil, and a rare one at that. Back before the world ended, dinosaur eggs were illegal to trade. On the black market, one could go for half a million dollars or more.
But why was this one glowing?
Caroline didn’t have time to figure it out. She shoved the egg into her storage space.
Raven was already weaving between the squirming larvae, his paws moving fast as he sprinted for the exit.
As soon as Caroline stepped through the doorway, she swung it shut.
One fat maggot tried to crawl out after them. “Gross!” She hissed and kicked it back inside before locking the door tight.
From the other side came faint scratching and rustling. Then silence.
They weren’t smart enough to open doors. Soon, the sound faded away completely.
It was probably the last trace of blood scent from Caroline’s hand that spread out. Once it faded, those things lost their sense of direction and finally stopped moving.
Caroline exhaled deeply. When she checked her watch, she was shocked. It had been over an hour.
Now it was already past three in the morning.
She had to move faster.
“Good job, Raven,” she said, patting his head. “You’re amazing.”

She grinned. Apparently, she’d just unlocked Raven’s mount function.
Maybe from now on, he wouldn’t have to pull carts. He could be her ride instead.

But after being praised, Raven didn’t look happy at all. Instead, he stared at Caroline with those big round eyes, filled with pure longing.
Caroline couldn’t help but laugh. She pulled out a bag of dog treats from her storage space and stuffed one right into his mouth. “Of course, good boys get rewards,” she said.
The danger had passed, but the tension left her hungry. Still, after what she’d just seen, she didn’t really have an appetite.
Raven, on the other hand, had a good appetite. After all that, he could still eat like nothing happened.
Now that she’d finished collecting everything from the 15th floor to the top, Caroline hurried down with Raven.
Before long, they reached the 14th floor.
It was almost completely buried in snow.
Since the snowstorm hit, the snow had piled so high that ten full floors were now trapped beneath it.
From here on, the place was even darker–pitch–black, without a single glimmer of light.
Caroline turned on her headlamp and pulled out an extra flashlight.
Raven stayed close by her side.
Caroline kept a sharp eye on his face, watching for any sign of danger.
After so many trips with Raven, Caroline could already read his expressions.
When he sniffed around and perked up his cars, it meant danger was near–but he couldn’t tell from where.
If he bared his teeth and growled while standing in front of her, that meant real danger.
He was ready to protect her.
But when he charged forward barking, it usually meant the threat was small. Something he
could handle in two bites.

Right now, Raven’s face looked calm and relaxed. That meant the area was safe.

Caroline finally let herself breathe. To her surprise, from the 14th floor downward, the goods here weren’t exports anymore–they were imports.
