Caroline picked up some precision parts–computer chips, display panels, and instruments she didn’t recognize–and stored them all in her storage space.
When she reached the 8th floor, she found everything below sealed in thick ice. That meant the floors beneath were already flooded with acid rain. No matter how valuable the goods were, they were all frozen solid and unreachable for now.
Just as she leaned over to check how deep the ice went, Raven tugged at her sleeve.
She turned and saw his eyes wide with tension.
Then came a faint splashing sound from below.
It was like something was swimming under the ice.
Caroline instantly returned to the stairs.
Before she disappeared behind the corner, she caught a glimpse of something enormous moving beneath the frozen layer.
She couldn’t make out its shape.
Only a massive gray–blue fish tail glinting faintly with silver.
A second later, her storage space vibrated.
Jasper must have sensed something delicious.
Caroline could almost imagine him bouncing around in excitement. “Feed me! I want! I want to eat it!”
Keeping her voice low, Caroline tapped her chest twice. “Eat, eat, eat–that’s all you think about! Even Raven’s scared of that thing, and you still want to eat it? You’re getting yourself killed before you can eat it!”
It had to be a mutated fish.
Even under the thick ice, the acid rain hadn’t frozen completely. Like the water beneath a glacier, there was still movement below.
Caroline knew that an animal’s evolution depended on how long it had been soaking in acid
rain.

If a fish had lived in acid rain 24 hours a day, she couldn’t even imagine how powerful it might
have become.
She decided not to stick around. Everything useful here was already collected. She had no idea if that mutant beast would leap out of the water next, walking on land like some nightmare evolution.
Caroline whistled softly to Raven. Together, they climbed back up to the 15th floor. From there, she slipped out a window and returned to the snowy ground outside.
After a moment of thought, she took out a large backpack from her storage space.
Caroline stuffed some of the supplies she’d collected.
She’d need to show those soldiers and Tyler something when she returned.
Otherwise, walking back empty–handed after being gone all night would definitely look suspicious.
The morning star was up, but the sun hadn’t risen yet.
Caroline laced on her ice skates. She was ready to take Raven back to the apartment.
She slid
past the spot where Mick had blocked the way. The place was a wreck.
Bodies and broken human parts lay everywhere, crisscrossed on the ice. It was hard to tell who was who.
She still checked carefully.
When she left earlier, she had counted six people, including Mick.
Now she counted the limbs–enough arms for five and a half people–but only five full bodies.
So General had ripped someone arm off, and that person still managed to escape?
Caroline checked the faces one by one. The man who runs business with Mick wasn’t there.
So Riley ran.
Caroline frowned. Raven pressed against her leg and hummed a soft “woo–woo.”
Footsteps echoed from all sides, fast and messy.
