He bit the sleeve of Caroline’s jacket and pulled her forward, stepping over a few bodies. without a second thought. He led her straight to where Jet lay wounded.
When Jet saw Caroline, he forced himself to stand, dragging his injured wing behind him.
It hung limp and bloody.
Despite this, Jet still chirped twice–weak, but stubbornly alive.
Caroline’s anger flared at this scene. “Who did this to you?”
Francis’s heart sank at this. Oh no! Is she about to lose it? She just promised to stay calm and not do anything recklessly!
He rushed forward, trying to stop her before things got worse.
Coincidently, Ambrose–who had been knocked out–was stepped on by Raven and Caroline as they passed. The pain jolted him awake.
He opened his eyes to see blood everywhere. Not far away stood Raven. Behind him, Caroline stared at him hostilely.
Panic hit him. He spotted Francis, who was running toward him.
“Francis! Help me! Francis!” Ambrose shouted desperately.
Ambrose’s eyes
lit up
the moment he saw Francis. Relief and excitement rushed through him.
As long as Francis was here, he thought, he’d be saved.
Sure, they didn’t get along, but Francis wasn’t the kind of man to make trouble for his commander. He always kept things within the line.
Tyler, who had been silent this whole time, handed his gun to Caroline. “The wound on Jet’s wing was caused by a Mauser M2 pistol,” he said flatly. “And the only person around here using that
gun is that old scumbag.”
Caroline took the gun without hesitation.
Ambrose screamed louder, desperate now. “Francis! Help me! Don’t just stand there–help

me!”
Francis hurried forward, trying to stop her. “Ms. Sinclair, think twice!”
But Caroline had already lifted her arm and pulled the trigger.
Bang!
The sound of the gunshot hit Francis like thunder. His mind went blank.

For a moment, he could only see the scene of Nathaniel’s whip slashing through the air, the sound cracking in his head.
Then came a strange wave of relief.
Ambrose, that filthy old bastard, was finally gone.
His whole family was rotten to the core.
For years, Francis had endured Ambrose’s petty tricks and constant trouble.
Their commanders had always been enemies. Ambrose was nothing but a loyal dog serving that commander.
At first, the Lowlands never acted so brazen. Besides Ambrose, who was in power, they never mattered much.
When the apocalypse began, Ambrose used some trick to win over a violent gang that had long given the army trouble.
That gang signed a pact with the military, which kept countless soldiers from being sent to their death.
Because of that deal, Ambrose and his family gained a place inside the new government
structure.
Behind closed doors, though, the Lowlands bullied the weak and hoarded supplies.
Francis had long had a problem with them.
Nathaniel had warned him many times to keep his temper and avoid a fight with Ambrose.
Still, when he saw Ambrose died tragically–his skull split open, brains spilling out the back, an arm ripped off, a huge dent where his shoulder used to be–Francis felt a cold satisfaction. Ambrose lay in a pool of blood, eyes wide with terror and never closing.
