Chapter 214 True Effect of Acid Rain

Rusty looked tough, but deep down he was just trying to save his skin.

He knew that if they all died here, Francis would take the heat for Ambrose’s death.

Killing them wouldn’t change anything.

They were just soldiers following orders. If Francis killed them, his men would start to think he didn’t value their lives either. They’d lose faith in him.

Francis lifted his eyes and looked at Rusty. “Well, look at that. Ambrose actually has someone with a brain under him. What’s your name?”

Rusty clenched his teeth and answered, “Rusty Delgado.”

Francis raised his gun and shot him straight between the eyes.

Rusty dropped dead on the spot.

The other two soldiers saw this and then tried to charge forward in rage.

Francis’s men stopped them, punching them hard, knocking them down.

Francis blew the smoke from his gun barrel and said coldly, “Figures. Ambrose’s men don’t know discipline. When your superior asks a question, you answer with respect.”

He looked at the two soldiers still struggling and cursing, then walked over and kicked one of them.

“You really think I won’t kill you? Think you’re smart? Listen up, I would let you go because you’re loyal and simply following orders from that fool. We’re all soldiers. Everyone has family. Don’t throw your lives away for a man who only knows how to lick boots, pull strings, and cheat his way up. If you piss me off, I’ll make sure you join your buddy in hell,” Francis said.

After that, the soldiers fell quiet. They stared at Rutsy, clenched their jaws, and cried in silence.

A young soldier stepped forward and asked Francis, “You’re letting them go, Colonel?”

Francis snorted. “What, you want me to kill everyone and play God? The smart ones and the brave ones always charged first; those had all died. These two are useless. Once we’re done

A few of his men escorted the two surviving soldiers away.

Soon it was just Caroline, Tyler, and Francis left in the hallway.

Caroline watched the way Francis dealt with the situation and finally relaxed. She liked him a

little more now.

She held Jet in her arms, gently stroking his head.

Jet leaned into her like a child acting adorable and seeking comfort. He raised his injured wing high as he clung to her.

When no one was looking, Caroline quietly slipped a small vial from her pocket. Inside was a little bit of the spring water she had divided earlier. She gave Jet just a few drops.

She didn’t dare give him too much. If his wound healed instantly in front of everyone, it would raise questions she couldn’t answer. But even that tiny sip worked fast. The bleeding stopped, and Jet looked much livelier.

Francis waited until the others had walked off. He sighed, rubbing his forehead with a look of helplessness. “Ms. Sinclair,” he muttered, “you’ve thrown me into a mess this time.”

Caroline smiled lightly. “Colonel Sutton, I know having someone die on your base puts you in a tough spot. It’ll cause trouble for you and for Commander Ball, too. But the Lowlands? Before the apocalypse, they were nothing. Sure, they had money in Hornvale, but no real power.”

She paused, then added calmly, “I don’t know how they managed to catch the army’s attention after the apocalypse. But Colonel Sutton, I understand your position now. I’m grateful for your help and your protection.”

Francis waved his hand, interrupting her. “Oh, come on, Ms. Sinclair. Let’s skip the polite talk. Just say what you really want to say.”

Caroline’s voice grew steadier. “I’m a woman who remembers both favors and grudges. Since you helped me, I’ll repay you. I know something that could help Commander Ball. If used right, it could save your soldiers and make your unit stronger. It could even give Commander Ball the upper hand against the other forces.”

Francis’s eyes widened with interest.
