Chapter 215 The Secret Behind Mutation
The climate partly caused the changes in plants, animals, and even insects.

But the real secret lay in the acid rain. Most of the researchers back then worked only in labs. They never tried combining the acid rain with the natural climate outside. By the time they realized what was really happening, the great heat had already begun.
The military was puzzled too.
They had already created mutant crops–grains that had survived after being soaked in acid rain. Those crops changed but stayed stable afterward.
Animals, however, were different. When they tried soaking animals in acid rain, most didn’t mutate at all. Many simply died.
Yet out in the world, there were mutated dogs and cats–military hounds and even pets—and no one knew why.
Some owners didn’t even know if their pets had ever touched acid rain.
But Caroline knew. She understood that animals were easier to mutate than plants.
Any animal that came into contact with acid rain could change–it was only a matter of time and degree.
The longer the exposure, the stronger the mutation.
But there was a rule: the mutation only happened under the conditions of the apocalypse, together with the climate. If the animal stayed locked in a small lab, it wouldn’t mutate. It would die.
Now, Caroline told Francis everything she knew.
“Raven mutated. Jet too. I’ve even seen another mutated dog. I’ve thought a lot about why this happens. Jet’s mutation–I caused it myself.”
Francis listened carefully. What she said made perfect sense. He turned to look at Jet, who was still weak but alive, and nodded slowly.
“Ms. Sinclair,” he said seriously, “you might be right. This discovery could be valuable to our military. But we can’t be sure yet. It still needs to be tested.”
Caroline nodded and said, “Go ahead and report to Commander Ball. Have them run tests. But

remember—after an animal is exposed to acid rain, don’t trap it in a lab. Let it live normally. If it’s a dog, let it run on open ground. If it’s a bird, let it fly. If it’s a cat, let it jump and climb. Don’t treat them like prisoners. Let them live freely, as part of nature. That’s the only way they’ll truly evolve.”
Caroline went on to explain why she had made such a guess.
She noticed that Raven and Jet began to change even before the deep freeze arrived. Their fur grew thicker, their feathers fuller. That was how she figured something in the environment was shifting.
She also explained why she had stocked up on supplies for winter. It wasn’t just a hunch. She’d noticed the changes in the animals around her and prepared early.
Francis listened carefully. What she said made sense, but he still felt uneasy. If this theory turned out wrong, he’d be the one getting chewed out–or worse, whipped–by Nathaniel. So he grinned and said jokingly, “Ms. Sinclair, your idea needs testing. It’s going to take some time. Commander Ball’s gonna have a few sleepless nights over this one.”
Caroline could tell he was fishing for something.
She smiled and said, “I get it. The government’s short on machine tools for the production lines, right? Last time, we agreed on a one–percent cut. I can raise it to one and a third.”
Francis held up three fingers. “Half.”
Caroline rolled her eyes inwardly. Francis could be charming when he wanted to be, but sometimes he was just plain annoying. “Fine. Half, it is.”
Francis beamed. He just scored another sweet deal and took advantage of Caroline.
Caroline saw the look on his face and knew exactly what he was thinking.
But she wasn’t planning to let him have the last laugh.
“Oh, by the way,” she said casually, “I’m setting up a lab on the 65th floor to study mutated creatures. I want to see if they can be used for medical purposes. I already mentioned it to Commander Ball. He seemed very interested, though we haven’t finalized how the military will be involved yet.”
Francis’s right eyelid twitched.
