Tyler had been watching her for a while.

Once they reached the ground floor, they slipped into a hidden spot behind the ruins. Tyler pulled out a modified car from his storage space, its black metal body dull under a thin coat of frost.

Raven jumped into the backseat, while Caroline slid into the passenger seat.

They drove in silence for a while, talking only here and there about nothing important.

Before long, they reached the edge of enemy territory.

About a mile from the enemy’s base, the two and their dog got out of the car.

Raven sniffed around carefully, checking the air. Once he was sure no one was nearby, he wagged his tail and trotted forward to take the lead.

Caroline and Tyler followed close behind.

The three of them kept to the edges of buildings, moving quietly through the snow. A few times they ran into patrolling guards but managed to slip past every time.

The night was pitch–black. The wind howled so loudly that even footsteps were lost in the noise.

It was clear Tyler had already scouted the area. He led Caroline up to a nearby high point—an abandoned, half–finished building standing cold and silent in the snow.

Before the world ended, many buildings were still under construction.

After the apocalypse hit, all those projects stopped halfway–dark, hollow skeletons standing alone in the snow.

“You keep watch,” Tyler said. “I’ll send Denton running toward that building. Stay alert.”

He gave Caroline a final glance, then disappeared down the stairs. He slowly vanished into the

snowstorm.

Their hiding spot was only about 600 feet from the enemy’s base–a cluster of villas that looked almost untouched by the disaster.

Caroline called Raven to her side. She pulled a pair of night–vision goggles from her storage space. She crouched behind a pile of snow and focused on the distance.

An hour passed. Nothing unusual happened.
