Chapter 42 Trouble Downstairs

A little girl was crying at the doorway on the floor below Caroline’s apartment, her face streaked with tears.

A crowd had gathered around, whispering and pointing. One tall woman in jeansprobably about five feet seven, with the confident look of a powerful woman.

She stood with her arms crossed and snapped at that slylooking man. Ivor, what’s your problem? You think no one’s in charge anymore? Want me to call the cops right now?

Caroline held Raven by the leash and stayed back, watching from a distance.

That’s when she realized the man with the sharp, narrow eyes was the same guy who’d been flirting with Reese in the group chat. He lived on the 15th floor.

When Ivor heard the word police, his expression shifted. He forced a smile and said, Hey, I’m doing this for everyone’s good, alright? The power’s out. The acid rain had probably corroded the power lines. Who knows when we’ll get electricity again? I just thought I’d borrow Freya’s generator. It’d help the whole building!

Caroline’s apartment building was a mixeduse complex, with yoga studios, restaurants, and even a cat café and minimart.

So yeah, it made sense that someone here might have a generator in the shop.

The woman in jeans rolled her eyes. Screw you! Help the whole building, you say? Please. You’re just trying to steal Freya’s generator. Everyone here knows your little business tricks, Ivor. We’re not stupid.

That made Ivor snap. Kay, what’s that supposed to mean? Don’t think I won’t hit you just because you’re a woman! The world has ended. Go ahead, try calling the cops. Check if your phone even works!

When he said that, Caroline finally recalled.

He was right. Yesterday, the internet went down. This morning, the power went out.

And now that she checked, there was no cell signal either.

The crowd started trying to break up the fight, stepping in to calm things down. There were too many people around; Ivor decided not to push it. Before leaving, though, he threw Freya Lambert a looka long, dark glare that said more than words ever could.

Then he turned and stormed off.

One by one, the onlookers left too, muttering as they went.

Once the area was clear, Caroline hurried back upstairs, grabbed Raven’s leash, and took him out for a walk.

But even as they walked, her mind was still stuck on Ivor’s expression. That look wasn’t normal. It had intentdangerous intent.

She had a feeling trouble was coming. When chaos finally hit her apartment complex, Ivor would be right in the middle of it.

Still, she didn’t plan to get involved. This was just the beginning. Things were going to get worse, much worse.

And from what she remembered from her past life in the apocalypse, one truth never changed. The clearer your head and the colder your heart, the longer you survived.

The two girls, Freya and Kay Page, looked like neighbors and good friends, too.

Caroline could only hope they’d stay cautious.

The building management was still doing their best. They had brought out a generator to keep the elevators running for now.

But once the elevator shafts got soaked in acid rain, those elevators would be done for. When that day came, everyone would have to rely on their legs.

Well, at least that would count as exercise.

Still, it gave Caroline a clear warning; getting downstairs would only get harder from now on.

She doubted that generator would survive long once the world truly fell apart.

Caroline took Raven out for a short walk and looked around the nearby shops.

She figured she might as well see if there was anything left to buyextra supplies never hurt.

But when she reached the main gate of the neighborhood, she froze. The street outside was already flooded, the water reaching above her knees.

Caroline tilted her head up. The rain was heavier than before.

t had been raining for days without a break. Luckily, this area was part of the city’s higher ground, so it hadn’t been completely looded yet.

But in the lower parts of the city, the water had probably reached the first floor by now.

Raven was obedient. He stood quietly beside her, staring at the rain with calm, humanlike eyes.

Caroline patted his big head. Somehow, his head felt larger than before; maybe it was just her imagination.

The streets were empty. But through the windows of nearby buildings, she could see residents standing behind glass, staring down at the rain.

Maybe they were just bored. With no power and no internet, there wasn’t much else to do.
