The voice was deep, sounding like it belonged to someone in his twenties.

Raven crouched close to Caroline. Even though they were already hiding inside the storage space, the dog stayed tense and alert. Every muscle was tight, ready to spring.

Caroline ran her hand gently along Raven’s back, trying to calm him down.

Caroline’s eyes darted toward Raven. She leaned close to his ear and whispered, Remember this voice. If we ever meet this guy again, warn me ahead of time.

Raven blinked his big round eyes. It was hard to tell if he understood.

Outside, the man stopped at the stairwell, as if he was listening.

He wasn’t going to find Caroline.

She had vanished into the storage space. After hearing nothing, he started down the hallway to the right.

Caroline held her breath, listening hard.

The man stomped along the 12th floor, kicking open doors one by one. He was clearly searching for someone.

Sweat broke out on her forehead. Luckily, she reacted fast and slipped into the storage space. If she had faced him headon, things could’ve gone bad.

After a long while, the sound of kicking stopped. Then came a different noise. That man had started searching for supplies.

Caroline and Raven hid inside the storage space. There wasn’t much to do, but they didn’t let their guard down. She pulled out a lunchboxand a cup of coffee, eating while keeping an ear out for any sound outside.

Raven got his own meal too. A plate of rice with spare ribs and pork stew.

Caroline had cooked it back home just for him.

The human and a dog ate happily together.

Once she finished her meal, Caroline finally felt her energy had returned.

She realized she’d been so focused on gathering supplies that she hadn’t noticed how hungry she was.

Raven, full and content, seemed to understand they were safe. He lay down beside her and started to nap.

Outside, the man kept moving. For more than an hour, he went back and forth, hauling stuff at an incredible speed.

From the dragging sounds, Caroline could tell he was carrying a lot.

Around seven in the morning, daylight filled the room, and the man finally left.

But now that it was bright outside, Caroline didn’t dare to go home.

When the man had first arrived, the building had been full of supplies. Now it was nearly empty.

Worse, he had followed Raven’s footsteps to get here.

If she showed herself now, it could be dangerous.

So she made a plan; she would clear out the rest of the 12th floor while it was still quiet. After that, she would hide in the storage space for the whole day. That way, she could stay safe and take her time studying the new upgrades inside.

Caroline planned to wait until nightfall before sneaking back into her neighborhood, taking a detour and climbing the fence.

With that in mind, she and Raven stepped out from the storage space.

The man who had been there before clearly knew what he was doing. He worked fast, and he was smart about it too. Every spicy food item from the entire floor was gone. One office even had boxes labeled employee welfare gifts,” filled with daily supplies and spicy snack packs. Now, every single one of them was missing.

Judging by how many employees worked on this floor, Caroline figured he must’ve taken at least a few dozen boxes.

All the highenergy foods and main staples were gone as well. Every cabinet was left wide open, especially in the kitchen. Even the ast drop of cooking oil was wiped out.

Even the general manager’s office had been broken into.

The fancy cigars and liquor were untouched, but both cabinets on either side of the desk were completely empty.

Caroline raised an eyebrow at that. This tall guy knows how to live well. And since he didn’t touch the booze or smokes, at least he’s got some discipline.

She looked around a bit more. In one corner of the room, she spotted a safe.
