Chapter 52 The Loudmouth Parrot

Where the heck have you been, jerk?!

The sound echoed through the air.

The barrier could block objectsbut not sound.

Caroline froze, every hair on her body standing on end. What on earth? Who taught this bird to talk like that?

She had no idea this parrot’s name was Jet. It wasn’t just any parrotit used to be a livestream star.

Before the world fell apart, its owner streamed with it twice a week. Fans would tease it, teaching it all kinds of strange phrases.

Jet had a fiery temper, loved attention, and was super clingy.

Its owner had left the city before the apocalypse, leaving Jet with friends at a small indoor animal park. But then the apocalypse hit.

Jet had never gone this long without people. Later, he found himself being stuck in a strange place with a number of animals it thought were beneath it, which only made it more frustrated.

Caroline looked at the parrot, then at the farm animals that clearly didn’t belong in its company. Maybe I should keep this one with me, she thought.

At least when it cursed people out, its voice was deep enough to sound like a grown man.

That could scare strangers off.

So, she let Jet out.

To her surprise, the parrot wasn’t scared of strangers at all. It hopped right onto Raven’s head, tucked in its wings, and lifted its chin high. The parrot glared at Caroline dominantly. Then it shouted again, loud and proud, Jerk, where the heck have you been?!

Raven’s face drooped instantly.

Caroline tried not to laugh. She went back to feeding all the animals on the ranch.

The place was actually pretty well designed, very userfriendly.

Each animal had its own little section, separated by barriers so they wouldn’t fight or trample each other.

The first rabbit she’d ever put into the ranchone that came out of the storage spacewas now hopping around with the other rabbits like they’d been friends forever.

When they saw Caroline, the little rabbits froze, shrinking back nervously.

She didn’t bother them. She simply refilled their feed and water, knowing they’d be fine for the next three or four days.

Then she walked over to the llamas, cows, and tiny ponies. One by one, she set out their feed.

The blackfaced goat was extra clingy today. It ran right up to her and rubbed against her leg like a spoiled pet.

Caroline laughed, patted its head, and handed it an extra carrot as a treat.

After that, she checked on the guinea fowl, bantam chickens, and guinea pigs. Each and every one of the animals looked good and

well taken care of.

Still, she couldn’t help but sigh at the guinea pigs. Honestly, she regretted putting them here.

In this country, especially the north, people didn’t really raise guinea pigs for food; they were pets.

And she wasn’t sure how to cook them.

In the south, guinea pig was a real treasure, worth way more than rabbit meat!

Well,” Caroline muttered, as long as I can afford to feed them, they’re staying.

She cleaned up and did a quick check around the farm. Caroline figured she could leave the animals alone for three or four days. But just as she was about to step out, a glowing screen popped up out of nowhere.

Collect farm byproducts now?

Caroline raised an eyebrow. Huh. Sure, why not?She tapped Yes.

The next moment, a strong invisible force shoved her straight toward the bantam chickens.

A basket appeared in her hands out of thin air.

When she looked down, there were several warm eggs nestled in the straw. Caroline’s mouth twitched. So that’s how it works, huh?She mumbled as she picked up the eggs and placed them into the basket.

Once she was done, another invisible push sent her stumbling forward. This time toward the cow.

Now there was a bucket in her hand.

What the heck?! It wants me to milk it?Caroline groaned.

Seriously? You can build a space farm but not make it automatic?

She sighed. Guess my system’s still too lowlevel for that.

After she muttered a few choice complaints under her breath, Caroline squatted beside the cow and tried to copy what she’d seen on TV. She squeezed and pulled for what felt like forever. Finally, she gets half a bucket of milk.

When she was done collecting the farm products, Caroline walked out of the farm with a dark face. She clutched her basket of eggs and bucket of milk. Fine, she said through gritted teeth. If I have to work this hard, I’m at least making something delicious out
