Chapter 53 The Loud Parrot and the Rising Flood
He actually called the warm milk stinky.
Caroline decided to ignore it. She’d deal with the parrot later when she had the patience.
But the little troublemaker wouldn’t quit. It kept circling above her head, trying to grab her hair with its claws.

Caroline, who had just taken a bite of her pancake, finally lost her temper. She grabbed the grey parrot out of the air. “If you keep acting up,” she warned, “I’ll send you back to the ranch!”
Raven stood up beside her, giving the parrot a threatening look.
At that moment, the parrot’s intelligence showed. It instantly tucked in its neck and went quiet.
After eating, Caroline checked the time. It was already noon.
She spent a few more hours working inside her storage space, planting small batches of crops in both fields.
Caroline didn’t dare go big yet; she wasn’t sure if the space had enough energy. She needed to upgrade it slowly and learn how it worked before expanding.
Then, she dug a small fish pond, filled it with spring water, and put in the fishes she had rescued. She wanted to see what would happen to them over time.
Before she knew it, it was six in the evening, and the sky was getting dark.
Caroline finally started to feel worn out. She pulled Raven close and scooped up the grey parrot, which looked pitiful after being scolded. Together, they curled up on the small bed inside the villa and fell asleep.
When she woke up again, it was two in the morning–perfect timing.
She could head home now.
Caroline listened carefully to the world outside her storage space. It was quiet. Taking Raven with her, she stepped out.
As for the parrot?
Too noisy. That parrot needed some training. She tossed it back into the ranch for now and decided to deal with it when she got
home.
Outside, the neighborhood was pitch black. The power was out. The world had gone dark and silent.
But when Caroline reached the stairs, she froze. The entire first floor was underwater.
The flood had risen so high it reached the second floor.
Her heart sank. If the water level was that high here, then her building’s first floor must be flooded too.
This was bad–really bad. Something serious was about to happen in her neighborhood.
Quickly, Caroline grabbed Raven and swam across the street to the other side. She climbed through the back gate of her apartment complex and went inside..

Before entering the building, she hid in a dark corner and pulled Raven back into the storage space–he was too big and too
noticeable.
If anyone happened to be awake and looking out the window, they’d easily spot a dog his size.
The neighbors nearby probably wouldn’t recognize her from a distance, but a dog as big as Raven would be far too easy to identify.
To be safe, she checked a few other floors first and waited for a while. Then, putting on her diving gear, she moved quietly through the flooded lower level toward her building
Just as she had guessed, the entire first floor was already underwater.
Even the second floor was barely holding up.
And the acid rain was still falling.
Harder than before.
Caroline climbed in through a window by the second–floor stairwell.
The elevators were long gone. The generator had probably broken down too.
Even if it still worked, there was no way she’d risk using it now.
The flooded first floor had already sent everyone a message. Things were getting serious.
She ducked into her storage space, changed into dry clothes, and slipped on a pair of lightweight shoes with soft soles. After taking a deep breath, she started climbing–one floor after another.
The building was silent. Only her breathing echoed through the stairwell.
Still, she moved quietly, placing each step carefully. The last thing she wanted was to draw attention.
In a world like this, even the kindest, most decent people could turn into monsters with fangs.
By the time she’d climbed eight floors, her legs wanted to give out, but she was proud of herself. All that daily exercise had paid off.
The problem was, her apartment was on the 66th floor. She still had a long, long way to go.
