Chapter 59 Lunch Alone
In the army, the age range for new recruits was 18 to 22.
Service lasted for two years.
That meant Tyler couldn’t possibly be a recently discharged soldier.
But his paper clearly said so. Caroline had picked up the detail. Tyler had been discharged in June.
June? Who gets discharged in June?

Caroline didn’t say anything, but she remembered it all. She decided to look into it later and became even more cautious of Tyler.
When he invited her to lunch, she shook her head. “Sorry. I don’t eat with people I don’t know well. Maybe later, when we’re more familiar.”
Tyler seemed to like her honesty. He just nodded and said, “See you after lunch then.”
“Yeah. After lunch.”
Now that the door was finally installed, it was time to move the supplies she had collected from the other apartments.
Once back inside, Caroline locked the door carefully. She took out a few dishes for herself and poured dog food along with a can of
wet food for Raven.
Thanks to the storage space’s freshness system, the food was still warm, just like when she first stored it.
The honey–glazed pork smelled incredible, the sesame seeds on top giving off a toasty aroma.
Caroline inhaled deeply, feeling life rush back into her body.
“Nothing beats eating at home. No one else’s food ever tastes this good.”
Tyler was obviously a rough, no–nonsense type. There was no way he could whip up some pasta, freshly cooked honey–glazed pork, and perfectly seasoned soup at home.
Caroline couldn’t help thinking of his obsession when it came to food. That guy couldn’t eat anything unless it was spicy.
She liked spicy food too, but not that much. No need to torture her stomach tonight.
The acid rain was still pouring down outside.
Caroline stood by the floor–to–ceiling window, eating from her lunchbox.
Raven lay on the floor, chewing his canned food.
Jet was flying around the room, fluttering from corner to corner until Caroline tossed him a pine nut. He caught it and perched nearby, happily cracking it open.
For the first time since the world fell apart, Caroline actually felt peaceful.
It was as if, in the middle of a deserted island, she’d found a warm little cabin. Her own safe place.

She sat on the floor and pulled Raven into her arms.
The big dog lifted his head from his can of food, giving her a look that clearly said, “What’s your problem, human?”
Caroline chuckled, picked up a piece of honey–glazed pork with her fork, and tossed it into his food bowl.
Raven’s tail started wagging instantly.
“You little opportunist,” she teased, tapping his head lightly.
Raven didn’t care. He happily finished one piece and stared up at her again, tail wagging faster, eyes sparkling.
So the two of them–one human, one dog–shared the meal together, bite after bite.

When Jet finally finished crunching on his pine nut, the parrot fluttered down to join them. He was squawking loudly just to make sure he wasn’t forgotten.
Outside, the acid rain was growing heavier. Caroline grabbed her binoculars and peered at the opposite building. The water had already risen to the second floor.
From above, the entire city looked drowned under an endless ocean.
Most of the trees were gone. Only a few tall ones poked their crowns weakly above the water.
Even some buildings were showing signs of corrosion. The walls were rotting away, leaving streaks and holes.
But Caroline knew one thing for sure. This was only the beginning.
After the meal, she rubbed her belly with satisfaction.
She glanced at the clock and realized half an hour had passed.
Caroline locked Jet back in his cage, grabbed her gear, and stepped outside with Raven.
When Caroline stepped outside, she saw Tyler already busy at work. He must’ve finished eating early and gone straight back to it.
