It had only been a few days since the power went out. They couldn’t reach the Lowlands. The food at home was completely gone. Now, with the rainwater rising higher every day, there was no way to get out.
So Jonathan came upstairs to beg Tyler for help. He hoped he had food or maybe a way to contact their family.
But the last thing she expected was to see Caroline–calm, clean, and somehow glowing. She looked untouched by the apocalypse.
As the argument heated up, more and more neighbors gathered in the hallway. Reese darted her eyes. A string of fake tears slid down her face. “Caroline … you dumped Jonathan,” she said in a trembling voice. “And then made Patricia think I was involved with him. All because you were already hooking up with his uncle?”
Caroline’s skin crawled at the accusation. What a disgusting liar!
Several neighbors peeked from behind doors, whispering and gossiping.
Many had been curious ever since Tyler helped install the security door on the 66th floor yesterday but were stopped by Raven guarding outside.
Now, seeing some drama unfold, they jumped right in and gossiped.
One older woman scoffed loudly. “Oh please, she looked so decent. Guess she’s just another slut! Shameless!”
Reese knew Caroline wasn’t good at arguing. Thinking she had already cornered her into silence, she acted even harder. “Caroline,” she cried dramatically, “your engagement to Jonathan was arranged by your grandfather before he passed away! How could you be so selfish and go against your family’s wishes?”
The crowd loved it. The neighbors, hungry for drama, jumped in one after another. “You’re unbelievable! What a rotten piece of work!” someone shouted.
“Yeah, yesterday she installed that big security door and even let her dog bite people. I knew she wasn’t a good one. Now look- turns out she’s not decent at all. Bah!”
“We lived in the same building, but she actually put her guard up against us! Who knows how much food she’s hoarded to install the security doors like that?”
“Haha! Bet she traded her body for those supplies.”
The hallway buzzed with cruel laughter and sharp, nasty words. Their voices–loud, shrill, and full of resentment–echoed off the walls like a storm.
Days of fear and hunger had turned ordinary, polite folks–people who once smiled and worked decent jobs–into gossiping, bitter tongues.
Reese lowered her head just enough to hide the small, satisfied smirk tugging at her lips. Caroline, I’ll make sure you can’t lift your head again. I’ll crush you right here in front of everyone.
Caroline let her eyes sweep over the ring of eager faces. A cold smile tugged at her lips.
She slowly gathered her loose hair, re–braiding it with steady hands, then looked straight at the woman smirking in front of her.

“Reese,” she said, her voice sharp as glass, “did you eat shit this morning? Because your mouth smells like it.”
That landed hard. Several people nearby burst out laughing.

Reese was wearing a mustard yellow outfit that day, which made her look like she’d just crawled out of a cesspit and covered herself with all that. The people around were nothing but fence–sitters. They weren’t there to judge right or wrong–they just came to watch the drama.
Reese’s face turned pale as she tried to play the victim. “Caroline,” she said softly, pretending to be fragile, “we’re both educated women. How could you speak with such… filthy language?”
Caroline let out a short laugh. “Filthy language? At least I don’t pretend to be a saint while secretly sleeping with my best friend’s fiancé and getting caught in bed by his parents!”
The onlookers gasped. Whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire. “Wow, such a pretty girl, but she’s rotten to the core.”
“So she’s no better than that girl with the dog.”
“Guess it’s just dogs biting dogs! None of them are decent.”
Reese’s face turned beet red. “Caroline, stop making things up!” she shouted.
